Clondoty Alex might be our only finalist in the Coral Golden Sprint this Friday but our little pocket rocket has a great chance after drawing a plum trap 1 in the £10,000 to the winner decider. Despite a hefty bump in the semi finals he railed tightly and chased home Paul Young's Ajlo Legalbeagle to book his place in the final and our East Anglian Derby winner and prolific open race scorer will look to add another big race title to his CV.
It was a tough night on Friday and the nature of these hot 400m races means you need a little but of luck as well as great trapping skills. In the second semi final both Ela Ela Ela Genie and Calco Flyer trapped ok but they were like a magnet to each other on the crucial run to the bend and they were in big trouble after that, to be fair both tried their hardest to get back on terms but had too much ground to make up and were 3rd and 4th respectively. Calco Flyer is on his last few races now before retirement and we will choose them carefully, Ela Ela Genie will drop back to sprinting with the Trainers Championship in mind.
Overall it was a tough night at Romford where for once this year our luck was out. Roswell Romanov was beaten at odds on in the heats of the Friday Night 500 Stayers but ran really well to qualify, he should come on for that run and our Coronation Cup winner can bounce back this Friday. New intake Scolari Sound was also beaten at short odds but also ran really well and he should be winning soon. Then we have Rubys Rascal who only just got the better of the high class stayer and Romford specialist Slick Sebastian but to be honest I was delighted with his run and a time of 47.27 is pretty good, he now should be spot on for the match race against Roxholme Magic that spices up the Golden Sprint card on Friday. Firstly let's say this match is no grudge match and isn't for any life changing money though £3,000 is a nice pot, secondly I agreed to the race as the RGOA benefits with 10% of the prize money being donated, also I think the sport needs something different like this as it adds a bit of drama to the occasion. Ourselves and Hayley Keightley have respect for each other and this race is one for sportsmanship and the result is not that important as long as it's a good race and everyone enjoys seeing two magnificent greyhounds in action, having said that we do want to win, lol!
Again it's been a busy week with trips to Central Park and Henlow where another one of our third season bitches Ribble Atom won on both nights and we have had a busy week at Towcester. This week we send a team to Sheffield where the main focus of attention will be the forthcoming Three Steps To Victory competition which we won last year for the first time with Patchys Kerry. As well as some hopefuls running in races like Roswell Red Kite and Garryglass Teddy we also have Rubys Razzle and Saffrons Tina trialling. There is also a Sky card at Monmore on Thursday and though we had no puppies to enter for the feature race the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby I hope to have two or three runners on the supporting card.
I'm so pleased with our new page that's up for Energize Kennels
. Our partnership with breeder Gary Goulden means we now have the facility to buy pups direct from Gary at realistic prices. Not only that we can see at first hand how the pups develop and have the latest up to date information about their schooling etc. Gary has two lovely January 16 pups out of our dual Category 1 winner Hometown Honey by Vans Escalade which are just starting their schooling trials. At £2,500 we will give a full guarantee on their place in our kennel and also that they are genuine and can grade at Towcester. Also very interesting is the litter by our superstar Evanta Evita, the pups are just three months old and our ready for sale. The price again includes rearing, schooling and delivered to our kennel. There is one dog and four bitches left for sale and I will be amazed if these don't turn out like her mother and have pace to burn. News that the prolific open racer Evanta Fantasy is in in pup is great news as her offspring will be in huge demand, contact myself or Gary if you are interested in getting involved.
It's amazing to think we are just over 10 weeks away from the Greyhound Derby. It's new home at Towcester will without doubt put on a great show and already I hear that thousands will flock to the venue to watch our showpiece event. Of course I would dearly love to have a finalist and can only dream of having the winner but looking at our kennel and particularly our four bend strength we might struggle. Having said that I might just have one or two up my sleeve! It will be a case of watch this space.
At Central Park on Tuesday we came away with a winner on the Sky card from our four runners when Ribble Atom bounced back to her best with a 7 length win in the marathon in a good 56.36. Rubys Razzle got no sort of run early in a hot 640m contest when only 3rd.
At Romford on Friday we had the most unluckiest night of 2017 so far with a number of near misses. Scolari Sound, Garryglass Dash, Roswell Romanov, Clondoty Alex and Muchas Gracias were all second though Clondoty Alex was an excellent runner up as it was in the semi finals of the Golden Sprint. Thankfully Rubys Rascal got home in the 750m reversing form with Slick Sebastian from the week before but only in 47.27. This was tainted though by the injury to Blastoff Bonnie who pulled up with a gracilis injury but hopefully we can get her back in a couple of months' time.
A good night at Henlow last night as we produced four winners from our eight runners. Cotton Pants took advantage of a class drop when landing a maiden by 4 lengths in 16.92, Shlowdown Sally was again impressive when making it six on the spin winning by 2 lengths in 16.64 and she is really making a name for herself. Adageo Gold landed a maiden 550m by a head in 33.68 and Ribble Atom made it two from two in 6 days running a blinder to win a 692m by 1 1/2 lengths in 42.86.
On Tuesday the closest we came to a winner was when both Cockney Rebel and Swift Dante were narrowly beaten in second place.
On Saturday morning Cockney Rebel returned to win an A6 by over 5 lengths in 29.09 and Swift Kaylee was game winning an A7 by 1 1/2 lengths in 29.22. Again not much luck on Saturday night with no winners though it was pleasing to see Famias Hope return from serious injury to finish a creditable 3rd in an A4.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACING - RIBBLE ATOM (TUESDAY)
GRADED - COCKNEY REBEL (SATURDAY)
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
Tomorrow we will be at Sheffield with runners and triallers including Rubys Razzle and Saffrons Tina.
On Thursday we will be represented with some runners at Monmore on their Sky Card supporting the Puppy Derby and on Friday a big night for the kennel as Clondoty Alex bids to land the Coral Golden Sprint final while a match race between Rubys Rascal and Roxholme Magic spice the card up. Roswell Romanov also goes in the Friday Night 500 Stayers final.
We will probably have a few runners at Henlow on Sunday.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Why o why did I not put Clondoty Alex up for the Golden Sprint is beyond me as he's a real superstar, I certainly wouldn't put anyone off backing him on Friday for the final. Calco Flyer was desperately unlucky not to join him but we did have a small consolation when Ribble Atom obliged at Central Park on the Sky card at 3/1 (5/1 easily available in the morning).
For a bet this week let's put my money where my mouth is and stick Rubys Rascal up to beat Roxholme Magic in the match race on Friday especially as he's now odds against. For me he will be away and gone but of course it's all about opinions and to be fair this will be done in the best possible sporting way.
