Bombers Bullet came oh so close to making it two Category 1 wins on the bounce when just beaten in the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic at Monmore on Thursday. It was a bold effort but ultimately a bit of bumping between himself and his kennelmate Roswell Romanov off the second bend, as they vied for the lead, cost him dearly and did Romanov no favours as well. After Roswell Romanov broke fast from trap 4 he just couldn’t clear eventual winner Ela Juliet from a plot draw in trap 1 at the first bend and with Bombers Bullet rushing to challenge up from trap 3 it all got a bit tight. Romanov and Bomber out middled Ela Juliet into the 3rd and 4th bends with Bomber getting the better of Romanov to kick on into the lead down the backstretch for the last time. It looked as good as won but Ela Juliet to be fair ‘took off’ and got a dream run along the rails as both Bomber and Romanov ran more middle and Juliet joined Bomber for the lead off the last bend, the two raced clear down the stretch but ultimately Ela Juliet just got her head in front when it mattered and running on strong. Matt Dartnall’s bitch won by 3/4 of a length in 33.77 with Romanov back in 5th though I thought he ran well.

Both Bombers Bullet and Roswell Romanov now go for the Coral Champion Stakes at Romford starting this Friday. Bombers Bullet was impressive over course and distance a couple of months ago recording a blistering 34.70 and is a likely favourite while Romanov needs no introduction at Romford having racked up over 30 open race wins at the track and was an unlucky runner up in the Essex Vase in March and he won the Coronation Cup in 2017. Both will be joined by Ninja Penny (4th in the Essex Vase Final) and Saleen Ash, who ran well in the Friday Night 500 Stayers final last week when a beaten favourite. Garryglass Teddy was also in the final will take his chance and we might have one or two more.

We have just one nice pup going to Nottingham tonight for the Puppy Classic and Good Lad should go well after some pleasing qualifying trials (two over Nottingham’s 480m). He looks to have drawn a reasonable heat though I’m not sure he is a tight railer so he will need to pop the lids drawn in trap 1. It’s been a while since we last won this competition and with Good Lad we might have a squeak if he comes forward.

Aayamza Breeze has been starved of marathon runs of late and has struggled to cope with the drop down to six bends so we will be hoping the heats of the 1st Containers UK Ltd event fills this Saturday at Towcester as Breeze’s owners (Ayamzaboys syndicate) have put up some decent money for the heats and final. Slippy Maska, Hazel Kemp’s star performer could be a contender now back from season and Breeze would have to go some to beat her at her best. With the TV Trophy over the course and distance not a million miles away this would be good chance to get some course form for any outside entries if they wish to travel.

I must thank plenty of our owners and general well wishes who were asking how Shlowdown Sally was after her career ending injury last week. Stefano Malegori performed some major surgery to repair the badly broken hock and the early reports look really good and Sally should be fine and ready to maybe have a litter of pups in a few months' time. Our industry is lucky to have quality vets like Stefano whose hard work, time and expertise would be sadly lost if the reports are true that himself and his assistant Mario might be leaving the sport as they are struggling to find a practice to move to with their current home in Little Wharley needing major repairs and maintenance.

OPEN RACING

On Monday Good Lad had his last qualifying trial for the Puppy Classic and Glory Snake was just beaten in a 500m Maiden.

garyglass_champ_fd.JPGAs said Bombers Bullet was just denied in the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic at Monmore on Thursday while Kilcree Diamond was a good second behind King Elvis in the Ladbrokes Gold Cup.

Saleen Ash was also just denied in the Friday Night Stayers Final at Romford while Garryglass Champ was our only winner in the opens at Towcester on Saturday running bravely to win the Stayers in 41.49.

TOWCESTER REVIEW

cousin_dupree_fd.JPGOn Friday we had to wait until the last race for a winner where Cousin Dupree ran riot in an A7 to win by 5 lengths in a career best 28.78.

Saturday morning we saw Roswell Martian double up with an excellent run from our November 16 whelp scoring by 5 lengths in 29.11. Calco Cool eased to an S2 grade took the invitation well powering to an 8 length victory in 42.00 while Tiffield Boy made it a good morning winning a D3 in 15.69 making it two wins from two starts.

In the evening Cotton Pants scored an overdue success in D1 in 15.52 while both Baroness Bullet and Shazzas Bullet were second. On Sunday night our only winner came in the shape of No Can Boogie who took an A5 in 28.79. Adageo Boomer, Swift Lisetta and Calco Swift all ran well and should be winning soon.

WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS

We just missed out with Bombers Bullet in the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic on Thursday having done him just to win! But he is a dog still worth following when he goes for the Coral Champion Stakes at Romford this Friday. We would be silly to leave Roswell Romanov out of our staking plan and I’m going to also include Saleen Ash and Ninja Penny who if at their best are more than capable of winning this event.

Good Lad at Nottingham tonight is our only interest in the Puppy Classic and that alone means he’s worth an interest.
