Weeks don't get too much better than the last one and our kennel is on cloud nine at the moment. After many attempts in recent years we have a second Champion Stakes in the bag with Patchys Kerry upsetting the big guns to land the spoils on Wednesday at Romford and the next evening at Hove a superb finish saw Airforce Duchess narrowly beat Aero Babooshka for a famous Kennel 1-2 in the Brighton Belle final. To cap a great week off Calco Flyer also qualified for this Wednesday's East Anglian Derby final when finishing 3rd in Saturday's semi final at Yarmouth.
The stage was set for Romford's showpiece event of the year on Wednesday as Kevin Hutton's Jet Stream Sound was made odds on to land the Coral Champion Stakes after impressive heat and semi final victories. Crowd favourite and our legend Adageo Bob was also unbeaten in the event but unusually for him he had been coming from way off the pace to keep his unbeaten record in the event. There were also four other rivals in the final all of whom were entirely there on merit. As the traps opened gasps from the crowd as Jet Stream Sound completely missed it, that was race over for him. It was Hazel Kemp's Franks Dream who smashed out and set a furious gallop but all eyes were on Adageo Bob now and though only moderately away he paced up well but crucially at the first bend he came together with trap 5 Jaytee Berlin almost turning him sideways and costing him valuable ground. Meanwhile, with Franks Dream up front chased by Teejays Panther, in third was our Patchys Kerry and you could sense she was a massive threat to the leaders. For a brief second down the back straight Adageo Bob looked a threat but as Teejays Panther faded he was again blocked and his Champion Stakes was over. Patchys Kerry now just a length behind leader Franks Dream as they turned for home was motoring and thankfully she cleverly switched to the outside to pass the leader with a couple of strides to go to land the Category 1 title and £10,000 first prize. Adageo Bob was a brave third for the Barfoots but the celebrations were all for owner Frank Taylor who thankfully called me three months back to ask me if we could train his pride and joy, a decision that has worked out well. Patchys Kerry has now come into season so will be out of action for a couple of months while Adageo Bob will have a rest and will target the Essex Vase in late November, that event will be the last of his brilliant career.
We have been churning out the winners all year and have many Category 2 and 3 titles to our credit but it was certainly nice to get that first Category 1 victory of the year under our belt. Amazingly that is win number 54 in that department in our kennel's history and every one is special. I've often wondered if there was an all time record available of which trainers have won he most Category or Class 1 races over the years in the sport's history? It would be interesting to see how our record compares to some of the the legendary trainers back in the 50's and 60's. As for our future there are still some historic big races we haven't won and that hunger is still there to go out there and win more titles. The game is, unfortunately, getting harder and harder but I still feel with Towcester's emergence we can survive and prosper, as always I have an excellent loyal team around me and I thank them for all their hard work.
On Thursday, with the celebrations of the previous night fresh, we looked forward to the Coral Brighton Belle final and I did think we had a chance but the way Millwards Lady had been running I thought we would do well to beat her with our two runners. As it happened it was ping break from Aero Babooshka that probably set up the race for our fast finishing Airforce Duchess as Babooshka led up Millwards Lady effectively stopping that front runner from winning as she quickly dropped away. Just like the night before with Patchys Kerry the strong running Airforce Duchess turned in a handy pitch and as they rounded the last bend Aero Babooshka tried desperately to hang on over the stiff 515m trip but Airforce Duchess nailed her on the line to win by a short head to take the prestigious Category 2 event for the Ayamzaboys Syndicate and a memorable 1-2 for our kennel. Of course we felt sorry for Stuart Forsdike and Aero Babooshka, she has had a busy year but been a great bitch for us, she will have a rest before targeting the Henlow Derby a track she loves. Duchess will now be stepped up in trip and is a huge prospect for the staying ranks.
At Yarmouth on Saturday the all important East Anglian Derby reached the semi final stage and our two remaining runners Evanta Evita and Calco Flyer were pitched in together in a tough looking first semi. Both were drawn poorly especially Evanta Evita in trap 5 and she found all the trouble going as she tried to get across to the rails and that was her competition over. Calco Flyer somehow managed to get into fourth place and in a desperate finish he caught Miss The Flight by a short head for third place and a place in Wednesday's final with Evanta Evita last,.Calco Flyer has been one of a most consistent dogs all year and hopefully he will get more luck than in the Arc final a few months ago. His syndicate of 24 members including myself and Kevin (Ulla) will all be in Portugal (fly out Wednesday morning) on the annual Calco Cup golf trip and we will be finding a sports bar in Albufeira that has the greyhound action from Sky Sports on. I'm sure the scenes there will be messy if our fella is lucky enough to win, I must admit though it's a good final and it won't be easy.
The new list of our kennel strength has now been completed for our 5 To Follow competition so any changes to each team entry can now be made. Your new teams will take effect from October 1st and all changes must be done by then. You are allowed as many as you like but your team still has to include at least two bitches. 'Chomies Homies' has been setting a furious pace at the top of the leaderboard from the off but like many previous years it's not over yet, a number of teams have come from way off the pace to land the spoils so make those changes count.
On Monday at Yarmouth Calco Flyer was second in his second round heat of the East Anglian Derby while Evanta Evita took hers well in 28.06.
As well as Patchys Kerry landing the Champion Stakes at Romford on Wednesday Clondoty Alex also took a 400m Sky race after railing really well while both Ribble Atom and Droopys Roller were both 3rd in their respective finals.
As said Airforce Duchess ran superb to win the Coral Brighton Belle from kennelmate Aero Babooshka while our only other runner on the night Garryglas Droopy was an eye catching second on his debut.
There was only a couple of opens at Towcester on Saturday and Deanridge Angel was most impressive winning over 480m in a very fast 27.92.
At Yarmouth in the East Anglian Derby semi finals Calco Flyer qualified for the final when third and Evanta Evita was knocked out. Black Francis was a fast finishing second in the heats of the Derby Purse over 659m.
On Friday we had three seconds with Libertine Louis, Airforce Venus and Droopys Ford with also three good winners, veteran Fairest Royal won in 28.75 and Carden Punch having her first race out of season won an A8 in 29.28 and Alice My Angel warmed up for the Bags Championship winning well in an A4 in 28.76.
On Saturday Aero Harrison and Saffrons Champ both ran well when runner up and again three nice graded winners. Ilewin Frimley beat kennel mate Penny Seabiscuit by 1/2 length in 28.53 in a competitive A2 and Sosaidhs Blue took another S1 in 39.70. Oldfield Lynda was very impressive when destroying D1 opposition in a very good 15.34.
Just the one winner on Sunday from half a dozen runners as Roswell De Niro took a good A2 in 28.56.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
Tonight we have two entries in the Romford Puppy Cup in Adageo Djongo and Libertine Louis.
On Wednesday the East Anglian Derby worth £15,000 to the winner is the feature race on Sky Sports and Calco Flyer runs from trap 3. Black Francis goes in the Derby Purse final and we will have plenty of other interest in the supporting opens.
We will just be at Towcester on Friday and Saturday as myself and Kevin are away from Wednesday until Sunday.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
We unfortunately never put Patchys Kerry up as our tip for the Champion Stakes and Adageo Bob's third meant no damage was done. A different story at Hove on Thursday as our supporters saw Airforce Duchess land the spoils and I know many got on at 20/1 ante post for a nice profit. Calco Flyer one of our recommendations for the East Anglian Derby could well boost the funds if he wins on Wednesday.
For a bet on Wednesday I can see Ribble Attom beating the likely favourite Bubbly Time in the marathon
