An interesting and varied week with plenty of winners an an odd disappointment. The semi finals of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup and Summer Stayers at Monmore on Thursday proved frustrating as Clondoty Alex missed out for a place in the Gold Cup final by the shortest of margins when 3rd after a brave effort in the first semi, California was also close up in 4th and in the last semi Roswell Iceman again did everything wrong and showed unbelievable pace but could still only finish 3rd. Both Billys Bullet and Ferryforth Fran were pitched in together in their Summer Stayers semi final with odds on Billys Bullet making a hash of the start, Monmore is a hard place to come from behind but he gave it a real go and in the end 630m proved a bit sharp for him and just failed to qualify when 3rd. Up front Ferryforth Fran was running his heart out again and this much underrated dog made another major final when finishing second. He faces some stiff opposition in this Thursday's final and a draw in trap 4 so it certainly will be tough.
If we were out of luck on the whole at Monmore on Thursday then certainly our open race team faired well on the road before and after with a treble from four runners at Sheffield on Tuesday with Rubys Rascal gaining more admirers as he ploughed through a six bend field to score in style and on Friday we had another treble from six runners at Romford.
On Saturday the Irish Derby at Shelbourne continued but over this side of the water the Category 1 Lowther Stakes for bitches kicked off at Towcester with six high quality heats. Deanridge Angel, Ribble Aon and Swift Windmill were casualties for us as they went out of the event but Airforce Duchess (3rd) and Ballymac Shirley (3rd) safely progressed to the semi finals and our ante post favourite Domino Storm who had been set back a couple of weeks ago with an Achiles Tendon problem looked back to her old self with a cracking 29.53 victory and she should come forward for the run. Again it was interesting to hear the many positive comments from open race trainers visiting the racecourse.
At Nottingham tonight we have two pups for the future entered in the Stadium Puppy Classic though it was a shame they both ended up in the same heat. Garryglass Champ and Garryglass Teddy should be names to watch out for in the next few months whatever their fate tonight,.
As well as the finals at Monmore on Thursday and the Lowther Stakes semi finals on Saturday we have the Coral Champion Stakes at Romford starting on Friday. Sadly we will be without the defending champion Patchys Kerry as she has moved to David Pruhs' kennel. After winning three Category 1's with Patchys Kerry we are proud of what we achieved with her and we wish Kerry and her trainer the best of luck for the future. We will be doing our best to retain the title and expect Swift Whirlwind, Tellhimjohn and maybe two or three more to give us a decent run.
We also have the Category 2 Henlow Maiden Derby to look forward to and both our entries Roswell Red Kite and Chubbys Oak qualified on Sunday when close up seconds and it was a good night overall with our other two runners both winning. So as you can see we are right in the thick of a busy time at the moment and with plenty of new names not familiar to all it's exciting times.
I've covered most above but briefly on Tuesday at Towcester both Ela Ela Genie and Risky Rumble were second in opens but at Sheffield Calco a Flyer showed how much he loves the track with another victory over 500m in 28.91. Airforce Duchess showed great track craft to win a bitches race in 28.99 and Rubys Rascal ran well to win over 660m in 39.03.
On Thursday at Monmore Ferryforth Fran was our only one that qualified for the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Final and on Friday at Romford Mashmad Eyebrows made it three from three in this country with a nice 400m maiden win in 24.10. Warming up for the Champion Stakes Tellhimjohn followed up his maiden stayers victory the week before with a fine win in 35.51 and the back in form Swift Whirlwind flew out the boxes and held on to win in 35.47.
Domino Storm was our only winner in the Lowther Stakes at Towcester on Saturday and on Sunday Saffrons Anna won at Henlow over 428m in 25.61 while Mass Megan was a winner over 550m in 33.56. Both Roswell Redkite and Chubbys Oak qualified in the Maiden Derby.
On Tuesday the vastly improved Sovereign King took an A5 in 28.61 and another improver Cappoquin Jack won an A4 in 28.64.
On Friday a couple of close calls before Catunda Daisy took an S3 in 40.65 while on Saturday the graded races before the Lowther Stakes heats saw Adageo Djongo win well in 15.49.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
The Nottingham Puppy Classic kicks off tonight with our two runners Garryglass Teddy and Garryglass Champ in heat 5 and Ela Ela Genie taking on some useful sprinters.
Four opens grace the card at Towcester on Tuesday and a big night at Monmore on Thursday sees Ferryforth Fran in the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Final and we have some decent runners in the supporting races.
The Coral Champion Stakes kicks off at Romford on Friday with Swift Whirlwind leading our team and on Saturday our draws for the Lowther Stakes at Towcester have worked out reasonably well.
On Sunday we should have a few runners including our two Chubbys Oak and Roswell Redkite for the Maiden Derby semi finals.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Not much luck with Clondoty Alex getting knocked out of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup by the shortest of short heads on Thursday. Deanridge Angel made an early exit from the Lowther Stakes but Domino Storm bounced back to winning ways and looks solid in her quest for another big title.
The Champion Stakes starts on Friday and Swift Whirlwind is back to his best and can hopefully go a long way in the event we won last year with Patchys Kerry.
