We may have been out of luck in the Coral Regency Final at Hove on Thursday where Rubys Rascal failed to overcome a poor draw but our Star Sports Greyhound Derby exploded into life at the weekend especially on Friday where we had a magnificent four timer. In all five of our eight remaining entries qualified for the last 48 and all five actually won their respective heats.
With not too much racing these days on a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday we prepared for a busy few days starting on Thursday. Our trip to Hove proved unsuccessful but we couldn’t fault our three runners who all ran well. Newinn Trump (3rd) is a winner in the waiting, Parker’s Dynamite (3rd) had little chance against a back to form and impressive Razldazl Radio but with the Grand National Trophy in the bag we weren’t too worried. Cincinnati unfortunately had to be withdrawn from the Category 1 Coral Regency after picking up a knock in the semi final and although Rubys Rascal had a bit more room from trap 5 the short run to the bend still proved costly when he was impeded at the first bend. With the favourite Clares Kyletaun away and gone Rascal chased in vain and did manage to run into 3rd place albeit over nine lengths behind the deserving winner who clocked a brilliant 41.05.
I wouldn’t say we had the best preparation for our Derby team with some minor niggles to sort out with a few of them but all went to the post in good order. Friday at Towcester was buzzing and Black Farren kicked us off with a battling win again, though breaking well he was still led up by Knockard Spring but he wore his opponent down to get up and win by the minimal margin in 29.49 (-20). Race of the night was certainly the match up between Bruisers Bullet and Rising Brandy who was unbeaten in this country. Despite still running well he had no answers to an awesome Bruisers Bullet who showed great all round pace to score by 4 lengths in a brilliant 29.05 (-20). Our veteran Boylesports Duke proved again age is no barrier with a fine win taking advantage of his stripes and leading at halfway he held off Farloe Hutch to win by 3/4 length in 29.54 (-20). Bombers Bullet completed a magnificent four timer for us when turning in a lovely pitch behind Bubbly Bluebird off the second bend, I must admit he even took my breath away as he simply destroyed Bluebird down the back straight to go on and win by 3 3/4 lengths in a very good 29.27 (-20). Our last runner Honest Robber tried his hardest but after a good break got swallowed up a bit at the bend and was shuffled back to the back and his Derby campaign was over. An excellent night overall for Team Wallis!
Over at Romford our successes continued with the prolific Roswell Romanov who was taking his strike rate to 39 wins from 71 races when landing the Stuart Roberts Quicksilver Final in good fashion. Turning behind the useful Oakfield Caesar he always had him in his sights before taking control at the 5th bend and going on to score by 3 3/4 lengths in a very good 35.30. We also had wins by the improving pup All Slick Now (24.24) and in a rare flat outing Swift Dartmoor (24.49) to complete a memorable Friday night for the kennel.
After an incredible Friday we were somewhat brought down to earth on Saturday as the second batch of Star Sports Derby heats got underway. Droopys Wilbury looked to have secured a run from a difficult draw and heat but just as he was about to turn in a qualifying position he was clipped and took a crashing fall, thankfully apart from a few scrapes he seems to have come off ok and should be fine in a week or two’s time. Saleen Ash got us back on track and he remains unbeaten after some clever tracking to avoid the running off Bockos Alfie and go on to score by 1 3/4 lengths in 29.68 (-20). Our last runner Rough Star was totally reliant on a fast break but fluffed his lines at the boxes and was never going to qualify but his day will come I’m sure.
It was another excellent two nights of ferocious action at Towcester and we now waited with anticipation for the draw which was done after racing. Eventually it certainly quietened us down as we now face some terrifically tough heats and draws with all five of our contenders. The rematch between Bruisers Bullet and Rising Brandy sees the draws reversed with Brandy on the inside of Bruiser while there are also dangers aplenty in the heat. Bombers Bullet also faces a tough opening heat from trap 4 and will have to track cleverly to win. Black Farren and Saleen Ash will have their unbeaten records to defend and it's not ideal being in together where they both face the Greyhound of the Year King Elvis. Boylesports Duke has lost the stripes and faces an erratic Newinn Shadow on his outside where they both have Dorotas Wildcat to beat though a non runner certainly aids their chances of qualifying.
Hopefully we will be lucky enough to get some if not all through and then the following week flies by. The quarter finals are Tuesday and the semi finals on Saturday so it's vitally important to get the dogs recharged quickly. A proper Derby tests every aspect of the Greyhound and Trainer, although in any other circumstance I wouldn't want to see any greyhound run three times in eight days it's only right that Derby class Greyhounds are allowed to do this. There is so much at stake and they should be at peak fitness given the format of the competition. I've every confidence our dogs will handle it but first we need to get through Saturday, bring it on!
As many people have seen I'm suffering from numerous injuries after our charity football match at Aldershot last Wednesday. It was great fun and a big thank you to all my players who turned up even though we lost 5-2 to a good Nick Brereton side. I actually had no intention of playing but with some last minute withdrawals I was only left with a squad of 14 which included me. I did my best for half an hour to keep the subs rolling on and off but eventually we were left with 10 men. Of course I thought I could do 10-15 mins but after a couple of nice touches an overstretch for the ball cost me dearly. I thought I might have ripped my shorts when I heard a tearing sound, unfortunately not! it was my hamstring. I should have left it at that but with 10 mins to go and two or three of our players, who had given their all, sitting on the sidelines I came on to play on one leg! Not a great idea as I proceeded to tear my calf muscle on my one good leg! Still at least we raised a few quid for retired dogs, think I will stick to charity golf events in the future!
I've covered everything above.
As well as the Derby heats on Friday we also had a couple of graded races. Koroleva Queen again ran well when second in a good P4 while the consistent Energize Honey won an A7 in a very good 28.87.
A couple of nice winners Saturday morning as Chubbys Caviar won a good A4 by over 4 lengths in 28.60 (-10) and Saffrons Tina got her head in front winning an S2 in 42.45 (-15). In a high class S1 after the Derby heats on Saturday evening Towstar Arry ran a blinder to deny Affleck Lady and kennelmate Aayamza Breeze by a neck in a very good 41.76 (-30). Ashakiran showed what she can do when dictating matters winning a very good A2 in a fine 28.33 (-20) to cap off another good night for the kennel.
On Sunday Tangled Upinbluue's fine record at the track continued as he took a messy A3 in 28.65 while there were some good runs from Brinkleys Cash, Jazz Jake and Towstar Jess who all finished second.
