Roswell Romanov got our 2017 campaign off to a superb start by landing the Coral Coronation Cup on Wednesday at Romford. Since just missing out on the Essex Vase last month Roswell Romanov had taken a Friday Night 500 heats and final and then won his heat and semi final of the Coronation Cup but a difficult draw from trap 4 in the decider made sure it wasn't going to be an easy ride and when trap 3 Kevin Hutton's Memphis Mafia came out the traps like a rocket he was struggling to get that vital first bend lead but again his pace and strength to ride a bump saw him come out the second bend in front. His exceptional middle pace took him clear and despite Memphis Mafia coming back at him towards the end he still had just over 2 lengths to spare to land the spoils in a fine 35.10. Evan Herbert's star looks set to have a great year and will be eyeing up a unique Romford treble by trying to add the Champion Stakes and Essex Vase as we go through 2017.
Ruby's Razzle was very impressive in a supporting 575m race clocking a brilliant 34.92 en route to a 6 length success and she now goes for the Prestige at Hall Green starting this Wednesday. Also in the Prestige is our St Leger hero Ferryforth Fran who was a close up 3rd in last year's event. Fran was our only winner in the Lawrence Jones Memorial 630m series of races at Monmore on Thursday. A brilliant card in difficult weather conditions made it tough going and in the race of the day over 684m Rubys Rascal was just caught on the line by the strong Slick Strauss. We were slightly unlucky in the marathon when Stellas Veekayee was challenging for the lead down the back straight for the last time when the curtain at the drop came across too early and the race was voided. Once again it was superb sponsorship and an excellent night's racing which we are all very thankful for. Stellas Veekayee along with Rubys Rascal will now be aimed at next month's Golden Jacket at Crayford. Rubys Razzle and Ferryforth Fran as well as Blastoff Bonnie will join them.
Yesterday we had a great day at Mildenhall with our kennel supporting the Greyhoundscene Forum day of racing. We sponsored a race in name of John Pearman a friend of not just our kennel but everyone in the East and Midlands through his Double JJ feeds. A decent crowd turned up on a wet and cold January day and the track staff did an excellent job of making the surface raceable. It suited front runners and thankfully from our six entries we had two winners with Roswell Roxanne and the impressive Garryglass Teddy both over 540m.
Again thank you for the kind comments etc about our website Review of 2016 and many people said how much they enjoyed the RPGTV show last Sunday which I guested on. This week I have a meeting or two with Towcester to talk about the Derby and what they would like to do. As I've said before it's so nice to see that they are seeking advice from trainers and how they see it, as always Towcester and their management team are a breath of fresh air in our industry.
On Wednesday night at Romford live on Sky we started with a second when Airforce Galaxy ran well over 575m in a Maiden Stayers. Rubys Razzle flashed round in 34.92 winning by 6 lengths. Blastoff Bonnie didn't stay 925m but Calco Flyer again ran out of his skin when 2nd in a hot 400m. Roswell Romanov was the star of the show landing the first big competition of the year with his victory in the Coral Coranation Cup.
On Thursday at Monmore in the Lawrence Jones Memorial Festival of racing we took 7 runners. Ela Ela Genie was second in the sprint as was Rubys Rascal when just caught on the line over 684m. The marathon was voided as the curtain came out too early and we did have a nice winner as our St Leger and and Monmore Summer Stayers winner Ferryforth Fran won over 630m in 37.90.
Back to Romford and Blackstone Jovi kicked our proceedings off with a fine win in his first ever open race taking a maiden 400m heat in 24.42. Ilewin Brickwall was a touch unlucky in the Maiden Stayers final when 5th but will be winning shortly over this trip. Swift Dartmoor was second but a good win from Cappoquin Jack in a maiden Stayers heat by 5 3/4 lengths in 35.79.
As said two winners at Mildenhall on Sunday afternoon completed another brilliant week for the kennel.
A decent night on Tuesday as Swift Clare won an A7 in 29.16, youngster Cockney Rebel ran really well in an A6 to win in 29.00 and Sovereign King was most impressive winning an A5 in 28.43. In form Ribble Rush beat Saffrons Tina in an A3 in a fine 24.48, Broxbourne Spark and Garryglass Pixie were both second before Swift Bravo took a good A1 in 28.42 which looked quicker to the eye.
On Saturday morning Swift Cody was just touched off in an A7 but Ribble Ghost ran on strong to win an A7 in 29.13. In the evening the closest we came to a winner was with the in form Tread Lightly who just got caught on the line in an A2 and he again improved bundles on the clock and a win in this grade is not beyond him.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
A decent graded card at Towcester tomorrow followed on Wednesday day time with three cracking heats of the Prestige as Rubys Razzle and Ferryforth Fran fly the flag.
On Friday we will be back to Romford with the two maiden finals over 400m and 575m are the feature and hopefully both Blackstone Jovi and Cappoquin Jack can score.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Blastoff Bonnie struggled a bit over the 925m last week at Romford and Rubys Rascal was just touched off on the line at Monmore so not the best start to the year. Ferryforth Fran heads to the Prestige on Wednesday and he was 3rd last year and has been much improved since, a fluent victory in the Lawrence Jones 630m last week he should go well in a very warm competition.
