Our Derby dream for 2019 ended on Saturday at Nottingham as Antigua Romeo bowed out in the quarter finals. No complaints, though last he tried his hardest and was only beaten just over 5 lengths. Being a May 17 whelp he has plenty of time to develop and who knows this time next year he could be a real contender. The Derby reaches the semi final stage this Saturday and no doubt it's going to produce two cracking races and some big guns like Magical Bale, Clonbrien Prince, Skywalker Logan etc are all still involved and of course not forgetting the defending champion Dorotas Wildcat who will not be giving his crown up lightly.
We will still have plenty of interest in the proceedings as we will have a strong presence in the supporting competitions. Brigadier Bullet and Antigua Fire go in the Stayers competition and both Antigua Romeo and Brinkleys Poet run in the JPW Cup over 480m. I was a bit disappointed that Antigua Vows didn't get in the Derby Plate as she was very unlucky in the opening round and has a couple of decent clockings over 500m but we do have a good interest in the puppy event where as well as the promising Saleen Again we introduce the Con Kirby finalist Antigua Rum. He has settled in well since arriving and his qualifying trials have gone well and did an excellent 29.71 trial over the 500m last night at Nottingham, both pups look real stars in the making.
We still have plenty of open racers to find races for and try and get as many in competitions as we can. Aayamza Breeze was a creditable 3rd in the Category 2 Cesarewitch at Crayford on Saturday, just cut off at the first bend by eventual winner Burgess Honey she chased hard in what was a high class final. The Gifkins family must have been proud of their bitch for taking some illustrious scalps to land the final and well done to them. It seems a long time since we had a winner at Romford so it was good to notch a double at the track on Friday as Cuil King (23.98) &andChubbys Caviar (35.21) won well.
It's that time of the year where we do our website's popular 5 To Follow competition. We are just finalising the list of our kennel strength that will be available to pick from and that will be up at the weekend with all the rules. The competition runs from July 1st until December 31st and I'm looking at a special prize this year in a half share of a pup of mine with no kennel fees and a couple of nice runner up prizes. It's great fun following your selections which can be changed midway through the competition in October, entrants can have up to 5 teams.
At Hove on Thursday just the one runner and Antigua Sands opened up her account in fine style when taking a 490m Maiden winning by 8 lengths in a fine 28.48.
Cuil King also opened his account on Friday at Romford winning a 400m Maiden by 7 3/4 lengths in a very good 23.88 (+10), Chubbys Caviar also followed up her win the previous week taking the top division of the 575m battling well to win by 2 1/4 lengths in 35.21 (+20), Towstar Jess never got in a blow in a very good Tony Williams Dual Distance Final.
At Nottingham on Saturday Antigua Romeo broke well in his Derby quarter final but just couldn't get across at the first bend and was crowded out of contention and his Derby was over. Not too much luck in supporting races as Brinkleys Poet ran well but was outgunned by Geelo Blissful who flew round clocking 28.16 a length outside the track record but Poet ran well to only be beaten 2 3/4 lengths. Brigadier Bullet was an unlucky second over 680m being hampered by the wide running trap 5 and the leader Ela Juliet had gone before he got going and was beaten 6 3/4 lengths in 41.44. Antigua Vows, in another 480m was badly hampered and got no sort of run when well beaten. At Crayford as said Aayamza Breeze was 3rd in the Cesarewitch final while Avastorm was another to find bad trouble in a 714m contest.
At Henlow on Sunday Busters Bullet won well over 550m beating kennelmate Kiltrea Mike by 4 lengths in 33.86 and Tommys Storm
ran well to beat Lowgate Rudy by 3 lengths in 27.95 over 460m.
On Monday Sidarian Dino ran well to win an A4 in 28.33 and Coasthopper Vic was 2nd in an A9.
On Tuesday morning puppy Bolshy Bullet took an A8 well winning by 2 3/4 lengths in 28.38 and Bobs Boy
won well in an S4 in 34.52. Just a couple of runners on the evening card before the meeting was abandoned because of a power failure.
No runners on Thursday and Friday and on Saturday Nothing But Love ran well to win an S3 in 34.00 (+30).
