TRAINER OF THE YEAR PRESENTATIONS
A rare weekend away to the famous coursing festival at Clonmel was thoroughly enjoyable and it was great to catch up with so many dog people on both sides of the water. The beautiful Minella Hotel in Clonmel was as busy as it could possibly be and there was a fantastic atmosphere for all three nights. It's been a few years since I've managed to get over to the festival and it certainly seems to be as popular as ever. Sadly after a couple great days coursing the final day was cancelled due to a heavy frost which was disappointing for the many thousands of coursing enthusiasts who had came from all over Great Britain and Ireland to watch the proceedings. More disappointing was the cancellation of the evening meeting at the track which contained some big finals including the unraced Stake final, they would have had a huge crowd and many of the stars on show would have been snapped up with so many of the English over, still all in all it was great weekend.
I think my tweet I made on Tuesday night sums last week up 'Can the last few days get any better' as after just celebrating a magical awards night in a London on Sunday where Cornamaddy Jumbo won Greyhound of the Year we moved on with business as Billys Bullet brilliantly took the Partex Marking Systems Prestige final in a memorable and thrilling race at Hall Green. Billys Bullet was made to work hard after Stuart Buckland's Supreme Turbo exploded from the traps and led right until the run in but eventually in a titanic finish Billys Bullet bravely stuck his neck out to land the £6,000 to the winner final by a head in a magnificent 39.07 (-15) just 3/4 length off the long standing track record. It was sweet revenge, in a nice kind of way, as in last year's final Stuart Buckland's Scala Dromin just nabbed Blonde Razor near the line to land the spoils. Billys Bullet looks a stayer full of class and the form of the race looks rock solid so we could well see him on the winner's podium again in a big final this year if he carries on in such a rich vein of form.
Towcester's first Sunday meeting seemed to go well despite a very cold day. These are very much a new experience for them and they will build up as they go along. Their Sunday lunches and carveries start in about two weeks' time and they will get some healthy bookings as the food is superb, not forgetting also, some better weather will certainly bring the crowds out. On the track we weren't too successful in graded races Friday and Saturday but Sunday in the opens we saw two superb performances with firstly a name to watch out for in the future called Cloudbursting. Having his first ever race in a sprint open he demolished some seasoned performers stopping the clock at an unbelievable 15.00. We have had him in the kennel a fair while but have had loads of problems with him but judging by this run, the fastest sprint so far at Towcester, he could be very special over the two bend trips. Domino Storm hasn't quite been at her very best in the last few weeks but she came back to form with avengeance when storming to a 480m win, a 3.91 split helped her to a brilliant 27.84 which officially is now the track record!
As said at Hall Green on Tuesday Billys Bullet landed our first big race win when winning the Partex Marking Systems Prestige final. on the supporting card Ilewin Allot got a dream run on the rails to win the sprint and both Blonde Razor (4th) and Black Francis (2nd) ran well enough.
On Friday at Romford Aclamon Josie ran well when 2nd in a 575m Maiden but the star of the show from our five runners was undoubtedly Evanta Fantasy who completed a five timer when winning in another fine 24.01. Vanfrenchie was 3rd in a fast run 575m won by Teejaysblackhawk.
On Sunday at Towcester good wins for Cloudbursting and Domino Storm. Vanbasten ran well when 2nd in a Maiden 480m though Blue Moment just failed to clear the field at the first bend from a wide draw when only 3rd in his hat trick attempt.
On Friday both Airforce Venus and Swift Whirlwind came 2nd while Calco Flyer again ran very well when taking a good class A1 by 2 1/4 lengths in 28.15.
On Saturday some new pups having their first runs all showed pace with Ribble Atom (2nd) looking a likely future winner.
