We may have been beaten in the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket last week but it's been another hugely successful week for the kennel with the highlight being a sixth consecutive win in the Peter Bussey Memorial Trophy with Lord Hesketh's Ribble Aon taking the honours.
On Tuesday an excellent card at Crayford live on Sky started well as Swift Dante took a maiden 714m in a very good 45.35. If that was fast then wow! Rubys Rascal demolition of a good field in the main 714m was stunning. Even after taking a bump at the start he quickly led at the first bend and then powered away to an 8 3/4 length success in a flying 44.61 just 4 spots outside the track record, this obviously highlights how unlucky he was not to make the final of the Golden Jacket. Before the big race Roswell Roxanne led home a kernel 1-2 when beating Airforce Duchess in the Tony Morris Memorial Stakes in 33.64, incredibly that was our 50th open race winner of 2017 and of course our two in the Peter Bussey Memorial Trophy Swift Whirlwind and Ribble Aon cracked out the traps and went round 1st and 2nd which was a joy in a very competitive race. Defending champion Swift Whirlwind had no answers to the pace of Ribble Aon and eventually finished a creditable 3rd to Lord Hesketh's bitch who gained small compensation for being withdrawn from the Gold Collar final over track and trip last year when damaging a toe, an excellent 33.44 and another annual podium visit with the sponsor's partner Chris Bussey.
The Ladbrokes Golden Jacket approached and I must admit to feeling not over confident of landing the £17,500 to the winner contest but as expected Rubys Razzle led up despite not trapping in her best fashion. Ferryforth Fran did trap well but rounding the first two turns he lost valuable ground trying to negotiate the tight turns, he was never really at home but another solid effort when down in 5th. Meanwhile Rubys Razzle made the best of her way home but she could never get far enough in front and the strong Boylesports Star passed her rounding the final two turns and went on to score by 5 lengths in 45.18, to her credit Rubys Razzle held on for second for another commendable effort. As usual Crayford were excellent hosts and it was a good night overall.
Also on the track at Romford on Friday our luck was good as we bagged a 1-2 in the Friday Night 500 Maiden final when the exciting prospect Minglers Toure beat kennel mate Cotton Pants by nearly 7 lengths in 24.38 and in the Steve Simmons Standard Trophy final Swift Dartmoor beat some decent rivals despite it getting a bit messy by 1/2 length in a modest 24.53. On Sunday at Henlow both our runners in the Maiden Gold Cup Muchas Gracias and Garryglass Champ won their respective semi finals and both will have a chance to land the spoils in next Sunday's final.
The next big competition hits us this Friday as the Coral Golden Sprint begins at Romford. We could have around 9 or 10 entries headed by grand old servants Clondoty Alex and Calco Flyer, sprinter Ela Ela Genie is currently one of the favourites but at 12/1 you can see what an open competition this will be. Talking of Romford, Racing Manager Peter O'Dowd phoned me this week to see if we would be interested in having a match race between Rubys Rascal and marathon superstar Roxholme Magic over 750m on March 17th. I accepted quickly as I love match races and to be honest I'm amazed at the reaction to this race since it was announced, it certainly will spice up the Golden Sprint final night as two magnificent greyhounds battle for a £3,000 prize, also my suggestion that 10% should go to the retired dogs went down well.
Watch out in a couple of weekw for a major new project on our website as we introduce a page where we will have pups from Gary Goulden's Energize Kennels for sale. Gary currently has a lovely litter of pups from Evanta Evita which are 3 months old. Evanta Evita was one of the best race bitches to grace our kennels and was runner up in both the Lowther Stakes and the Oaks and won some fantastic races in a very good career. Gary also had some Hometown Honey pups for sale and has potential top brood bitches Evanta Fantasy, Saffrons Anna and also Fairest Royal who will be mated to Adageo Bob when she next comes into season. All his pups will be heading for our kennels after they have been reared and schooled and prices for these include all these costs. We are just putting the finishing touches to this new venture and once again it adds to our magnificent website.
As said a great night on Tuesday at Crayford with Ribble Aon the highlight on the night landing the Peter Bussey Memorial Trophy. In all we had four winners taking us past the 50 open winners for the season.
Both our intended puppies for the Monmore Puppy Derby are not quite ready for the event after finishing down the field on Thursday in Trial Stakes while Roswell Iceman ran well when 3rd in a hot 480m race. Another four winners were landed on Friday at Romford, as well as competition winners Swift Dartmoor and Minglers Toure we also had Stellas Veekayee take a 750m and Blackstone Jovi took a Golden Sprint Trial Stake in a rapid 24.12.
At Henlow on Sunday both Muchas Gracias (33.46 calc) and Gartyglass Champ (33.06 calc) won their semi finals of the Maiden Gold Cup, also Shlowdown Sally made it four on the spin with a rapid 16.41 win in a sprint.
Last Tuesday was a good night for us on the graded front as we had four winners from eight runners. Parkers Star (40.99) and Catunda Daisy (40.53) took their respective S3's, Swift Bravo is becoming prolific at the track and won an A2 in 28.54 while veteran sprinter Airforce Karla took a D2 in 15.56.
Calco Swift won well for us on Saturday morning by 7 lengths in a very good 28.44 while at night we had a 1-2 when Ilewin Brickwall beat Mickey Thebutcher by 3 1/2 lengths in 28.68 and Brynoffa Jasmine just got the better of Giveabitback Sue in 15.47.
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
Some opens grace the card at Towcester tonight but our main action is at Romford on Friday where the Coral Golden Sprint kicks off and on Sunday when Muchas Gracias and Garryglass Champ compete in the Henlow Maiden Gold Cup final.
