Thankfully we are just getting to the back end of a shocking kennel cough that has affected around 40 of our youngsters over the last 2-3 weeks. Most are now ok to trial back which presents its own problems, there is no Wednesday day time trial session and trials before racing are at a premium so it won't be easy getting all ours back on the cards quickly. It's been a tough few weeks dealing with all this and we have had a busy competition schedule. It's been disappointing not being involved in both the Golden Sprint and Arc finals and winners overall have not been as regular as normal but once we are fully over the bugs that have been around I'm sure we will bounce back.
Hopefully the kennel can get back to form tomorrow as Patchys Kerry and Ribble Aon travel to Sheffield for the semi finals of the Three Steps To Victory. Patchys Kerry was just touched off on Tuesday in the heats over 480m but that was her first run since winning the Golden Jacket and she will come on for the outing. She will need to as she again has trap 4 in a tough looking semi this time over 500m. Ribble Aon arguably goes from a slightly easier semi final in trap 5 and I thought she ran really well last week when a good second to fastest heat scorer Mustang Chick and 500m will be right up her street.
We have plenty of open runners at Towcester tomorrow and both Ginas Lad and Saffrons Boxer run in the Towcester Racecourse Maiden Final which looks a decent race. Also on the card is a decent one off race for bitches the Mervyn Cross Memorial race and we have two entries in the shape of 2015 'Bitch of the Year Domino Storm and our Brighton Belle winner Airforce Duchess. Of course the Derby is now around six weeks away and I'm starting to think about our team and their preparation and on that note I will have a major announcement next week.
The political saga of the GTA and the GBGB continues as the GTA held a peaceful protest at the headquarters in London on Thursday in which they wanted to hand over a petition calling for a Forensic Audit but the GBGB closed their offices that day. It's obvious that there has now become a real stand off between both sides and I can see the GTA's points to a certain degree but a Forensic Audit would cost a few hundred grand I'm sure and with the fund so low that might be a problem, as for the GBGB they do need to deliver in their quest to seek more funding.
News that Galliard Homes' plans for redeveloping Wimbledon Stadium have been put on hold by Boris Johnson's team in the Mayors office could mean all is not over for our greyhound stadium. Paschal Taggart will now submit his plans and I really hope they have a glimmer of hope of coming off. If there is any hope the whole industry needs to get behind his plans including the GBGB, if the bookmakers had any vision they would also see that keeping a track in London would have major influences on the rest of the sport long term, it would be great if they added their weight behind Paschal's plans.
On Tuesday at Sheffield the Three Steps To Victory kicked off and Patchys Kerry was just denied by Cattrig Croft by the minimum margin in 27.75 with Droopys Achieve a further 2 1/2 lengths behind. Ribble Aon came up against an in form Mustang Chick who beat her 3 3/4 lengths in a fastest of the night 27.57. Over at Towcester Saffrons Boxer was an unlucky 2nd in the heats of the Towcester Racecourse Maiden going down by a head in 28.79 (-20) and Ginas Lad showed some excellent early pace when winning his heat by 5 lengths in 28.61 (-20). Ferryforth Fran tried his hardest to make it to make it 5 from 5 but was forced wide on a couple of occasions and had to settle for 3rd over 655m. Farran Evans almost made the bend in front in the final of the Towcester Racecourse Sprint Final but was badly hampered at the turn and finished last. The previous week's impressive scorers Deanridge Angel and Madabout Marco both missed their breaks and could only finish 3rd while Airforce Duchess was 2nd in a decent bitches race.
At Swindon on Wednesday night all our five runners ran well but we returned with only one winner. Billys Bullet and Calco Flyer were good seconds and Domino Storm made it another Sky win in the Bitches 480m when scoring by nearly 5 lengths in an excellent 28.39 calc.
At Romford on Friday Deanridge Angel was a close up 3rd in a hot 575m Maiden and in the Friday Night 500 final Macs On Storm just gave himself too much to do when runner up to Jaytee Vegas going down 2 1/2 lengths in 35.57. In a cracking Bitches race over 400m Evanta Fantasy was just beaten by old nemesis You Never Listen and Marmalady by a head and a short head in 24.19. Sosaidhs Blue made sure we didn't went home empty handed when taking the last race over 750m battling hard to lead on the run in to score by 2 3/4 lengths in 47.89.
At Henlow on Sunday just two runners in the heats of the Bookmakers 460m Bitches Ballymac Shirley won at long odds on in a fastest 28.00 and in form Saffrons Anna made it a memorable hat trick when scoring in 28.12 for the Markwallisgreyhounds Racing Club.
With so many of our strength down with the cough we were restricted to just six runners on Saturday with Parkers Poison coming away with a win in the S1 by a neck in 39.84 calc.
