Despite getting three of our five entries through to the next round of the Greyhound Derby we can't help feeling slightly dejected as our real hope of landing the classic Brinkleys Poet crashed out in heat 16. A missed break and crowding at the first bend caused his demise but thankfully he seems to have come off sound and hopefully we will be hearing plenty more about Poet during the rest of the year. Indeed the night started well as Antigua Sands ran a blinder to run the classy Sporting Dave to a neck in a good 29.71 in the first heat, Antigua Romeo showed blistering early pace to lead up in a decent heat but was caught on the run in by the strong Droopys Davy going down 2 lengths in a fast 29.46 and Busters Bullet escaped a tough draw when running really well to finish 2nd to Scottish Derby runner up Coneen Jack in 29.70. On Saturday we just had the one runner in Antigua Vows and though not leading she looked set to qualify when a close up 3rd right until the line where Forest Alan dipped to beat her a head for that vital 3rd spot, the heat being won by Droopys Nadal in a fast 29.32.
Overall the Derby looks ultra strong and nobody can deny the high quality on show from both sides of the water and it was no surprise to see the track record smashed when Skywalker Logan recorded an incredible 29.05 and again I wouldn't be surprised if the 29.00 barrier was broken. The second round continues with heats 1-8 on Friday and we have Busters Bullet who has to beat three first round winners in Desperado Dan, Nice Charmer and Lemon Express, no easy task there! On Saturday both Antigua Sands and Romeo also face stiff tasks but all three of ours will be in tip top condition and write them off at your peril. Antigua Sands looks a bitch coming forward and is nicely out of season now and if she can trap well she can definitely qualify at least.
I'm guesting on RPGTV on Thursday and will be joined by my daughter Emily who is 15 but is now licensed and is enjoying parading and helping out at the kennels in her spare time. Obviously her education at her age comes first as she reaches a crucial stage in her life but it's great to have all our family members involved as Daniel works full time for me and Sarah. We bought Emily a racing pup for Christmas and she is a proper character and Emily is delighted to be able to parade her at Henlow. Her name is Far Froman Angel and already she has won 5 races from 14 and recorded an excellent 28.01 in an A6 on Sunday. This October pup (Doctor Zhivago x Locamon Sarah) has tremendous early pace and if a season doesn't intervene may well be winning opens soon, of course she will be ruined for life now she has a winning greyhound!
With the Derby on there’s only limited opportunities for competitions and open races but we are hoping to have runners at Romford this Friday. We haven’t had any for a month as we don’t seem to have the right type for 400m but hopefully we can get back in the groove there. Henlow’s opens on Sunday seem to be filling quite well though they are very competitive and every winner there is hard earned. Our top stayers are having a bit of a rest though a week Saturday we aim to have thre runners in the Cesarawitch at Crayford including Regency champ Aayamza Breeze.
It was quiet leading up to the Derby at Nottingham on Friday and Saturday and we only had open race runners at Henlow on Sunday last week. It wasn’t the most successful of days where Towstar Billy, Glory Snake and Towstar Del Boy all finished 2nd from quite a few runners though in form Algo For You ran well to get up and score by a short head in 27.95.
On Monday a couple of excellent runs from Towstar Winston in an A6 in a fast 28.06 and Towstar Del Boy who won well in an A5 in 27.89. On Tuesday evening Tiffield Lady won well in an A3 in 27.95.
On Thursday veteran Sidarian Dino followed up last week’s win with another good victory in a fast 28.05 and Energize Bobadoo won well in an A6 in 28.35.
On Saturday Puppy Coasthopper Vic scored his first victory when dead heating in an A11 in 29.11 while in a couple of graded races on Sunday Far Froman Angel won well in an A6 in 28.01.

WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
No doubt after a good few weeks we were feeling deflated seeing our star performer Brinkleys Poet eliminated at the first stage of the Derby and then Antigua Vows getting chinned on the line for qualifying. We still have three left in but all have a mountain to climb in a high quality event but we will be trying our hardest to get ours to the later stages at least.
Finding a bet now isn’t easy so we will leave it for another week
