domino_storm_fd.JPGAn excellent week just gone where some of our old and new guard showed off their talents. Domino Storm began the defence of her Oaks campaign at Belle Vue on Thursday night in great style winning her heat by 8 lengths in a fastest of the night 27.65, while Roswell Romanov the following night at Romford made a difficult heat of the Essex Vase look easy when romping to a 7 length victory justifying his lofty position at the head of the ante post market. Ela Ela Genie took another Sky Sprint race at Nottingham on Tuesday and with the National Sprint just around the corner he is well on course to finish our year off in style. Talking of the old guard there was a fantastic treble in the last three races at Romford on Friday, to cap a great night off, when veteran Evanta Fantasy and our East Anglian Derby winner Clondoty Alex both won well over 400m and at over 4 years old our Regency winner Billys Bullet took a maiden 750m race, yes a maiden!

Talk of the Derby venue all week revealed that there was three tracks who submitted an application to hold our Classic in 2017. The last chance to apply was on Friday and Sittingbourne had publicly announced they were in the running and another unnamed track had also bid (my guess it was Sheffield) but having seen Towcester's superb presentation to the working group tasked with deciding the venue I would be very hopeful that the show piece event will be heading to Northamptonshire when the announcement comes this week.

We are currently right in the middle of some major kennel refurbishments and I must admit that the stress of working around the builders and trying to prepare runners for all the races is incredible but I can see light at the end of the tunnel and I'm looking forward to the work being completed this week and we can get back to some kind of normality. Once we do we have a whole load of new pups to take in and I'm thinking the first part of 2017 might be a period of stability rather than us flying all over the place in search of open race winners and competition victories. 2016 has been a tremendous year and Patchys Kerry's early season Golden Jacket triumph set us up. We have already equalled our best ever haul of seven category 1 winners and we certainly have a chance of bettering that with strong hands in both the Oaks and Essex Vase but whatever our fate it's been another stellar year, we are well over 1200 points in the Trainer of the Year standings and our highest ever score of 1445 in 2005 is not impossible to get close to or pass though we would need to win both the aforementioned competitions to do that.

OPEN RACING

At Nottingham on Tuesday on the Sky supporting races Ela Ela Genie came from off the pace to comfortably win a good sprint in 17.80, Rubys Rascal ran well in a good 680m race when 2nd and Chubbys Oak was also 2nd in a sprint later on. At Towcester Calco Flyer just missed out for a place in the British Bred Derby when 3rd in his semi final.

On Thursday at Belle Vue the RPGTV Oaks kicked off and Mashmad Eyebrows qualified from the first heat when 3rd behind Hurrache Finn (27.65), she should come on for that run. Ballymac Shirley got her campaign off to a good start with a gutsy short head win in 27.87, Airforce Duchess finished strong to be beaten 2 1/4 lengths by Mustang Chick in 27.81 but Saffrons Anna went out the event. A few were predicting our defending Champion Domino Storm would have a hard task in heat 5 but a smash break and just clearing the pacy trap 3 Fairly Sweet at the first bend she set sail for home coming home by 8 lengths in a fastest of the night 27.65.

At Romford on Friday the defence of our Essex Vase memorably won by Adageo Bob in 2015 started and Roswell Roxanne took heat 1 clutching victory from the hands of defeat eventually winning by 1 1/2 lengths,. Dspite defeat by Swarbys Millward in 35.80 both Ferryforth Fran and Ribble Aon qualified safely in heat 2. In heat 4 Roswell Red Kite was eliminated after early crowding but Rubbys Razzle ran well to finish 2nd to the eye catching Peregrine Falcon beaten 2 1/4 lengths in a fast 35.46. Swift Whirlwind failed to lead and also went out the competition in heat 5 but ante post favourite Roswell Romanov never gave his supporters a moments doubt in heat 6 as he cracked out and gave his rivals a running lesson winning by 7 lengths in a fastest of the night 35.23. Our night was completed with a fine treble with Evanta Fantasy (24.23) and Clondoty Alex both winning 400m races and Billys Bullet justified favouritism when taking a maiden 750m by 3 1/4 lengths in 48.00 on a slow track.

TOWCESTER REVIEW

On Tuesday in graded races Swift Dante was 2nd in a good S1 and Blackstone Jovi 2nd in an A4 with Tellhimjohn our only winner in an A3 in 28.55 calc.

No luck on the Saturday morning 8 dog racing with Ilewin Brickwall coming closest when 2nd in an A6. A similar story at night time with Union Pride, Airforce Cluxton and Ribble Rush all running well when runners up and Sosaidhs Blue made sure we didn't go home empty handed when winning an S2 in a fine 39.87.
