This Wednesday at Hove our season has got another great chance of landing our third Category 1 of what's been a tremendous season already. Both Rubys Rascal and Aayamza Breeze treated us to a fantastic semi final of the Coral Regency last Thursday when Rubys Rascal led from the first bend with Aayamza Breeze giving chase from the third bend and ante post favourite Jaytee Patriot recovering from a poor start to chase the pair. The crucial point came at the sixth bend of the 695m when Aayamza Breeze tried to pass Rubys Rascal on the inside but he slammed the door shut and held her late challenge to win in 41.54 the fastest time of the three semi finals. It's great to have two in this prestigious final and both are capable of winning but have to overcome difficult draws with Rascal in trap 4 and Breeze in trap. The short run to the bend can play a huge part and only their best breaks will suffice. We famously won this event last year with the legendary Billys Bullet and he also came out of trap 4 so it's not impossible. Whatever the result both Rubys Rascal and Aayamza Breeze are set for a tremendous year.
Although we didn't have the best of week's, particularly at Sheffield on Tuesday night, we still had some good highlights. First and second in the Hove semi final on Thursday was followed up by excellent wins for two of our old guard. Calco Flyer
was again majestic in winning at Romford on Friday bringing his tally of open race winners up to 10 for 2017 and that was matched by the prolific Clondoty Alex on Sunday at Henlow who was foot perfect again out the traps. Ela Ela Genie won well in a hot sprint at Hove on Thursday making it 20 wins from 60 career races (only out of the frame 14 times) and now moves to pastures new with Kevin Hutton. At the end of the first third of the season we are still on track to beat the long standing record of open race wins in a year which stands at 364, we currently have 127 though several recent injuries will certainly be against us, some new recent intakes will take time to reach open class so only plenty of luck will be needed to keep pace with our targets.
The Star Sports Greyhound Derby is fast approaching and judging by all what's going on in Ireland and recent trials and races at Towcester a mass invasion from the Emerald Isle can be expected. Tonight the ante post favourite Clares Rocket takes in a trial stake and we have the hugely exciting Bruisers Bullet in the race. Beaten last week at Sheffield he is clearly still learning the ropes but back on home soil he will give the Irish superstar a race I'm sure.
On Tuesday at Sheffield a missed break from Brynoffa Jasmin put paid to any chances she might have held in the Bresmed Northern Sprint final and defeats for Bruisers Bullet, Ribble Atom and Airforce Duchess (ran well) made it a rare Sky night without a winner. Cotton Pants was also beaten when runner up in a sprint at Towcester.
At Hove an excellent 1-2 for the kennel in the Coral Regency semi final with Rubys Rascal holding off Aayamza Breeze in the fastest time of the night. Ela Ela Genie signed off his career with us with a 16.22 victory in a hot sprint.
Garryglass Champ showed good pace to win a heat of the Friday Night 500 Maiden Stayers in 35.94 while Calco Flyer again put his opponents to the sword in a heat of the Friday Night 500 Standard winning in 23.87 while Chubbys Oak also qualified when runner up in his heat.
No joy at Towcester on Saturday where Roswell Iceman missed his break in his Derby Trial Stake while Famias Hope ran well earlier when 3rd in his division. At Henlow on Sunday near misses for Garryglass Teddy and Macs On Storm who where both second but again Clondoty Alex proved reliable with an excellent win in 27.40.
Jazz Jade and Ashakarin both ran their best races to date when second and Ilewin Brickwall was 3rd in an Owners Bonus Series final.
On Saturday morning Cockney Rebel, Ribble Ghost and Toker Creek all came close when second while at night from a few runners Energize Jack scored a debut win in a very good 28.64.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN - CALCO FLYER
GRADED - ENERGIZE JACK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
Tonight a hot Derby Trial Stake for Bruisers Bullet with Ilewin Brickwall also in a tough one.
The prestigious Coral Regency Final takes centre stage tomorrow at Hove as we bid to emulate last year's victory for Billys Bullet with Rubys Rascal and Aayamza Breeze.
We will be back to Romford on Friday as both Garryglass Champ, Calco Flyer and Chubbys Oak run in Friday Night 500 finals and on Sunday we should have a few runners at Henlow.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Aayamza Breeze recommended at 8/1 would have looked even more huge had she got a better draw tomorrow night but even from trap 5 she is a big runner in the Category 1 Coral Regency final. Rubys Rascal has taken to Hove like a dream despite a bit of a rushed preparation and anyone who has backed Breeze must have a saver on our class act though again trap 4 is not ideal.
Our record on Friday nights at Romford is outstanding and for some reason the bookies love to try and get our veteran and grand servant Calco Flyer as he keeps drifting out on course to some incredible prices and again this week the same could happen in the Friday Night 500 Standard final, drawn lovely in trap 2 I can see another famous victory again.
CALCO FLYER - 5 pts win - Romford - Friday
ADVISED LAST WEEK
AAYAMZA BREEZE - 2 pts ante post 8/1 - Coral Regency - Hove - Final Wednesday
