It was nice to get a well deserved break last week after a hectic few months and I enjoyed the half term break with a week in the sun in Lanzarote with Sarah and Emily, the kennel was well run by my staff and I could sit back and relax! Funny but on the Tuesday we were walking to a restaurant early evening in the harbour part of Puerto Del Carmen and who did we bump into? Yes Racing Post Greyhound editor Paul Brown who was also taking his family to a restaurant nearby, small world!
We kept a close eye on the racing of course especially Wednesday at Doncaster where Avastorm finished a respectable 4th in the Category 1 Yorkshire St Leger final, we had a winner on the night with the rejuvenated Antigua Romeo who landed a hat trick of open wins.
Our main action on Saturday was at Crayford where unfortunately both our runners in the Gold Collar semi finals finished 3rd (only first two qualified for the final) with Chubbys Caviar beaten a short head for a place in the final. We had a nice double at Monmore for there festival races with Antigua Breeze and Antigua Fire which ultimately kept our lead at the top of the Trainer of the Year standings to around 60 points.
This week on Saturday we have the stayers classic the St Leger at Perry Barr and our team will be headed by our Kent St Leger winner Antigua Fire who should be well suited to the stiff 710m. We will also be entering Brigadier Bullet, Avastorm and Bumblebee Bullet in our bid to win a 6th St Leger in the last 10 years, with the prize money back up to where it should be it should be an exciting event. We have decided to leave our Champion Stakes winner Aayamza Express off as the 710m might be a bit hard for her and with the Essex Vase coming up in just over three weeks we will lay her out for that to try and achieve a great Romford double.
Avastorm was 4th in the Yorkshire St Leger final while in supporting races Brigadier Bulket ran well but was second in a 661m while Antigua Romeo made it three in a row with a rare come from behind win in a 483m open.
On Friday at Romford Have A Brandy took his heat of a Friday Night Standard in good style in a fine 24.01 though we were out of luck with our other runners.
On Saturday at Crayford in the Gold Collar semi finals both our runners missed out narrowly on a place in the final but we did have some luck at Monmore as Antigua Breeze beat some useful pups over 480m recording an excellent 28.03. Passing Stranger (3rd) and Chubbys Turkana (3rd) both ran very well and Antigua Fire proved his love for the track with another bold run over 684m winning by over 7 lengths in a brilliant 40.60.
Just a couple of seconds on Monday with Sligo Lilly and Garryglass Royal. On Tuesday night Domino Ninja at last got off the mark and she did so in style winning by 3 lengths in a good 28.36.
On Thursday Roswell Rainbow surprised when taking a sprint in 17.23 and Tiffield Blueboy ran well to win a good A3 in 28.03 to make it a hat trick of wins.
On Saturday Domino Ninja made it two wins in a week with a fine 4 length win in 28.66 and Muxton Belle was also on the score sheet winning in 28.49 while there was a well deserved victory for Ice Cool Ellis in 28.56.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACING - ANTIGUA FIRE
WHAT’S ON NEXT WEEK
A quietish week until the weekend where we will be at Romford on Friday with Have A Brandy in the Friday Night Standard final.
On Saturday the St Leger kicks off at Perry Barr and Antigua Fire leads our team to try and gain another big race success.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
After a brilliant couple of months the wheels have slightly come off on the betting front. Chubbys Caviar just failed to make the Gold Collar final by the minimal margin which typified our luck of late.
The St Leger kicks off on Saturday at Perry Barr and we have to go with Antigua Fire who shrugged off not making the Yorkshire St Leger final with a blistering win at Monmore on Saturday and he should relish the extra 50 meters at Perry Barr. He runs a track first time fantastically as does Avastorm who can again go well and is worth a small interest.
