A long trip to Newcastle on Saturday saw two of our three entries in the All England Cup qualify for the semi finals for this Saturday. Both Calco Flyer and Swift Whirlwind were third and ran well enough but will need to step up on their performances if they are to progress to the final. When we go up again we will also take Jimmy Nailed On (Great North Run) and Domino Storm (Angel Of The North Oaks) for the supporting competitions. Newcastle like many tracks Saturday night suffered a bit crowd wise as the Rugby World Cup game involving England kept people at home. Australia were different class and an early England exit was not something on the agenda but I'm sure many track promoters were happy that England are out!
We have the Henlow Derby kicking off this Sunday and Evanta Evita should improve for a nice 27.89 trial yesterday. We are hopeful of Blue Moment being entered as well, he is back from a dislocated toe sustained at Yarmouth last month and will have a 400m trial at Romford tomorrow. Penny Seabiscuit ran well when third in a trial stake and Evanta Fantasy will be our other entries. Sadly no Clondoty Alex who had a rough ride in another trial stake and to make matters worse was bowled over after the line sustaining some nasty cuts and bruises and will be out of action for at least a couple of weeks.
I must admit I've been really pleased with the way Towcester has been going lately. The track is running well and we have had a steady stream of interest from new owners wanting dogs to run there and hopefully that will continue. As mentioned over the last couple of weeks our kennel is going through a transitional period with many youngsters coming through the grades or just about to start their careers. We are of course still committed to go in search of big competition winners, hence the trips to Newcastle and Henlow this week, but with Towcester putting on high class open and graded racing we don't need to be running all over the country for races. This transitional period is a perfect time for us with the Trainer Of The Year virtually in the bag for an amazing 7th time in 11 years and if some of our pups continue to progress we will be well on course for another great year in 2016. Sidarian Bella, from the only litter by Kinda Ready out of the top class Rockburst Megan, bolted in on Sunday and looks one of those pups that could go on to better things, she is only a Jan 14 whelp. Also Famias Hope on Saturday was in fine form winning his second race out of four by over 10 lengths and this Feb 14 pup also could go on to better things.
A reasonably quiet week was followed by a busy weekend. Our luck seems to be right out at Romford since we won the Champion Stakes a few weeks ago and again on Friday all our runners seemed to mistime their breaks, a track where you can't afford to do that, which resulted in no winners with Parkers Poison a close up second the best of our five runners.
The Premier League at Towcester again had some high class racing and we had no representative in the sprint as Ilewin Allot was withdrawn lame in the morning. Both Millroad Rodger and Deanridge Angel were out of the points in the Standard 480's but Jimmy Nailed On did score vital points when second in the Stayers race. In two six bend novice events Ribble Rush needed all of the 655m to get up and score on the line in 39.96 and in the top division Garryglas Droopy was caught on the run in after leading at the fourth bend but ran well when beaten 1 1/2 lengths in 39.83.
On Sunday at Henlow as said Clondoty Alex had some misfortune in a Derby Trial Stake and Penny Seabiscuit was a good third. In a 550m Maiden Libertine Dandy was second.
Ribble Atom was very impressive in a warm S1 on Friday, our T.V Trophy third turned handy and the result never looked in danger as she led home a kennel 1-2-3 with Sosaidhs Blue and Ferryforth Fran in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Rufford Atom ran his best race to date when taking an A5 in good style in 28.53.
On Saturday as well as the Premier League and the opens Famais Hope was very impressive when taking an A5 by over 10 lengths in a good 28.51. More of a surprise was Droopys Ford who took a decent A4 by over 4 lengths in a fine 28.22. Nimrod Son would be one of the most winning dogs since Towcester opened and scored his 9th win in 29 starts when beating A3 rivals also in a career best 28.33. To cap a very good night Oldfield Lynda warmed up for the Bags Championship when taking the D1 by over 3 lengths in 15.41.
A good day on Sunday as well with an impressive win for Sidarian Bella. Saffrons Anna is in good form and took an A3 in 28.65. Some of our younger pups like Sidarian Lady, Dodger Lane, Swift Slaney and Swift Boyne all ran well in defeat.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
As usual our busy time will be the weekend with Romford on Friday and back to Newcastle on Saturday for the All England Cup semi finals and supporting competitions.
As well as Towcester Friday/Saturday and Sunday we will also have runners in the Henlow Derby on Sunday night.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Evanta Fantasy was beaten on Friday but a touch unlucky,. At Newcastle warm ante post favourite Swift Hoffman was eliminated and it certainly opens up the competition and Calco Flyer was a decent 33/1 at the start, he will need to work hard from a trap 4 slot if he is to make the final.
In the Henlow Derby I'm going to stick with our favourite Evanta Evita who could well be suited by track and trip and warmed up with a solid 27.89 trial last night.
