Directors Chair's superb win in the Gerry Allen Quicksilver Stakes at Romford on Friday capped a good week for our kennel and seeing 'Dev' back to his best should boost this year's Championship chances. Indeed he was one of several fine wins on the open scene this week that made the Performance Of The Week difficult to pick with the likes of Aero Blackjack's memorable win on Thursday at Walthamstow as he and the talented Ballymac Weeshie went head to head in a thrilling battle over 640m - one that might be seen again over the coming months. Also Seanis Strike's brilliant 2nd round Derby heat win which repaid the faith of a
group of our owners who dipped into their pockets to keep the dog in the kennel as he bolted out the traps to scorch to victory in a fine 28.68 at juicy odds of 14/1!.
Seanis Strike's win and the qualification of Commander Chief and Seanis Lad through to the next round has made next week's build up for the kennel very special. We are down to the last 48 where all the races are on Saturday and this is always a great night's racing where the Derby really begins to warm up. I think we have an excellent chance of getting at least one of ours through to the later stages. More importantly, after Saturday's 2nd round, I have now hit the front in our kennel (me, Patrick and Pete) tipping competition and I will make sure they don't hear the last of it if I go on and win!
It was announced this week that Walthamstow is to raise funds for former trainer Gary Baggs, who is under going extensive treatment at the moment for cancer, with a meeting on 5th July and I would like to ask anyone interested in supporting this meeting to contact me or Chris Page over the next few weeks . We at Imperial Kennels are pleased to announce that we will be holding a family summer party for our owners on Sunday 22nd June at 3 pm where we will be holding a raffle with the proceeds going to Gary so I would be pleased if our owners
could put this event in their diaries.
Directors Chair, after last week's fine returning effort at Hove, was stepped back up to six bends over 575m at Romford on Monday in the heats of the Gerry Allen Quicksilver Trophy and although he led at the first bend he was more workman-like than impressive when beating Xaar Dom Booty by 1 1/2 lengths in 36.00 (-20), and on Wednesday both Jonos Patience (badly drawn) and especially Elusive Tuesday were eliminated from their semi of the Peterborough Derby.
There was a fine open card on at Walthamstow on Thursday and Eye Onthe Flame could not recover from a missed break when 3rd in the 475m hurdles behind Winkys Don but there was a pleasing debut over six bends for Centaur Deetee when she finished 3rd behind Lastinfirstout in the Maiden Stayers. Eye Onthe Brave produced an encouraging display when 2nd to Droopys Oi Oi in Div 2 of the puppy 475m beaten a length in 29.13 (-10). Discreet Cat lost the early-pace battle on the run to the bend to Journey Star and was bumped out of contention to be beaten over 6 lengths in 40.00 (-20). Missed A Train was also runner up to a Seamus Cahill
runner, Directors Choice, in Div 2 of the 475m Standard beaten 2 3/4 lengths in 28.77 (-10). One of the most under-rated bitches in the country, Genesis Alix, showed her class when romping away with the 835m Marathon by nearly 10 lengths in a fast 53.00 (-25). Aero Blackjack is becoming very important to the kennel's success and produced a quality performance in defeating Ballymac Weeshie in the top Division of the 640m by 3 1/2 lengths in 39.76 (-20).
The Blue Square Greyhound Derby second round began on Friday and Eye Onthe Veto was desperate in every way as he was bundled out of the competition finishing 4th to Expresss Ego. Although 5th behind Toosey Blue, Scintillas Ruby ran her heart out and looks to have a fine career ahead of her. Seanis Strike at last unearthed the ability we know he's got when scorching to the first bend (4.85 sec) and then holding off comfortably the talented Irish raider Catunda Harry to score by 1 3/4 in 28.68 (+10) but there was no luck for Lockdale Diamond who should benefit from his Derby experience. Commander Chief was faced with an awkward draw in his heat and found trouble at the first and third bends but qualified easily behind winner Annual Scholes.
At Romford Directors Vision (3rd), Eye Onthe Power (2nd) and Roswell Gemini (2nd) both ran decent in their respective races though it looks as if Roswell Zodiac reserves his best performances for this tight track as he beat Fear Oliver 5 lengths in 24.74 (-30). Eye Onthe Force on his debut over six bends took a decisive lead in the top division of the Maiden Stayers and although slightly fading won well enough by 2 lengths in 37.75 (-50). The final of the Gerry Allen Quicksilver Trophy over 575m was made to look easy by Directors Chair as he trapped
brilliantly and held off the attentions of Murlens Dubh before going away to score by 3 3/4 lengths from the running on Sherries Boy in a fine 36.02 (-60) and to complete a great night the in form Millwards Summit led all the way to win the top division of the 575m Stayers by 1 1/4 in 35.55 (-70).
On Monday's Bags card Ants Gunner followed up last week's win with a better display scoring again in 29.13 (+10) by 1 3/4. Chilli Blue has a good strike rate and that was improved when he led all the way to win by 2 lengths in 29.24. Wilson Pick it looked set to open his account when racing to a 3 length lead but unbelievably was distracted at the third bend throwing away the race and eventually being beat 3 3/4 in 29.74.
Tuesday's graded card had two S1's and testament to our strength in these races we had the forecast in both of them. In the first, Millwards Summit looked at the top of her game when beating Mooloolaba in a good 39.79 (+30). In the second Coolanga Flyer just got the better of
Ingenious by a short head in a thrilling finish in 40.22 (+30). King Jackson (3rd), Kinda Flashy (2nd) and Toasting Jack (3rd) all ran well but it was left to the in form Centaur Gemstone to steal the show with an all the way victory in 29.05 (+20) with a 4.89 sectional.
If there were prizes for second place then on Saturday we would have cleaned up. Wilson Pick It, Cassius Clay (ran well), Lockdale Lady (winner next time), Twilight Fantasy, Mountjoy Gold (unlucky) and Centaur Iris (again) all filled the runner up spots and both Treacle Satin and Castlemary Podge who were 3rd ran well but our only winner was Ortuna who won well by 4 1/4 lengths in a calc 29.01.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACE:- DIRECTORS CHAIR
GRADED:- ANTS GUNNER
WHATS ON THIS WEEK
The leading open racer in the country this year, Genesis Dream, struts her stuff on Tuesday in a Sky race at Peterborough supporting the Puppy Derby. Also on the card Gavin Cheeseman's other flying bitch Genesis Alix returns to the track where she won last month's competition over the 790m but has a tough draw in trap three. You can tell the year is now warming up as our big guns over the staying trip, Directors Chair and Aero Blackjack, go head to head in the £3,000 to the winner Duffy Group Test heats on Thursday with supporting opens. Friday should see a strong team go to Romford for their regular opens and watch out for Missed A Train and Chilli Cobra stepping up in trip. All eyes will turn to Wimbledon on Saturday when the third round of the Blue Square Greyhound Derby reaches the nail biting time with Seanis Strike, Commander Chief and Seanis Lad still in the thick of it.
