A quiet week overall for the kennel where the winners were scarce and a few of our runners looking short of a run or two. Open racing is quiet as well in January where the Coronation Cup is the only competition of note as our sport has lost the Prestige and the Henlow Puppy Derby from the calendar which is very frustrating for all owners and trainers.
Planning was made ante-post favourite in some bookmaker' eyes for the Coronation Cup that began at Romford on Friday but found the going tough and could only finish 5th in a hot heat won by Bansha Mo. He did look not quite match fit but we can forgive him for that effort I'm sure he will have a great 2013. From our nine entrants we qualified three through to next Frida's semi-finals, Darian Chief, Carden Twilight and Adageo Brae which are all in separate semi's which was good news.
Great to see Daren Johnson with Kinda Ready and Kinda Close on the sofa for RPGTV on Saturday night, both looked at home spread out on the couch but I think Errol got the worst deal as Del Boy was acting like methane mike all night! Daren as always talked very sensibly and tipped a few winners but the stars were without doubt Del Boy and Rosie, a great advert for retired dogs and seeing Kinda Ready winning the Derby again brought back those happy memories from 2009.
In Saturday's Racing Post Tom Kelly gave us some strong views on current issues in our sport and the need for the industry to pull together which clearly is what we have all been asking for over the last few years. Most importantly Tom expressed that he was cautiously optimistic of a new deal with Sky on greyhound racing returning to the channel perhaps as early as March. Words can not say how important the return of Sky is to the future of greyhound racing and if Tom can pull this off we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
If you get a chance look at our new Feature Dog page which has been updated showing all our current kennel strength with pictures and write ups while our updated Staff Profiles are nearly completed. Again thank you for the nice comments I have received on our Review of 2012.
I Am Titanium runs tonight at Romford in the heats of the Coral On TV Puppy Trophy and will hopefully give members of our markwallisgreyhounds 'Racing Club' a huge thrill if he wins or qualifies for Friday's final. Our 'Racing Club' is a great way to enjoy ownership at affordable prices so get in touch if you would like to be a part of what will be in time the best club in greyhound racing. I will be at Romford on Friday and anyone who comes and meets me during the night and joins our club will get a free £50 betting voucher and a signed programme.
Lil Risky won effortlessly at Romford on Monday in the heats of the Coral On TV Standard Trophy by over 7 lengths in 24.16 (-20).
At Hove on Thursday I think we had something that I've not seen before, five runners and yes you've guessed it five seconds. Castlebride Dan was very unlucky when done out the boxes but ran on well. Ayamzabeauty first time over the extended trip ran a brave race while Benkaat Boy also ran well in a 475m. Aero Prince was just collared right on the line in a warm sprint and Swift Lucozade is looking more of a stayer every race when she ran on well over 515m in the Ladies race.
At Romford on Friday as said it wasn't the best night for winners and only three of our nine entries qualified from the first round of the Coronation Cup. Lil Risky never got any sort of run from trap 4 in the Coral On TV Standard Trophy final when 5th but Son Of Legends did make sure we didn't go home empty handed when showing serious back straight pace to land a 400m Maiden in 24.56 (-20) giving Paul Cardosi and Hayley Keightley a first winner as owners in our kennel.
I don't think I can remember the last time we had a winner at Yarmouth and from our five runners on Saturday night Castlegale Hawk came closest when second. Hillcross Miami a strong running College Causeway pup was just beaten a neck and a neck in third place and his turn doesn't look far away.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
Tonight I Am Titanium and Ballyfinn Oscar compete in the heats of the Coral On V Puppy Trophy at Romford.
We will be back to Hove and possibaly Henlow on Thursday and on Friday the sem-finals of the Coronation Cup take centre stage at Romford.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Not the greatest start to the year with both our ante-post bets in the Coronation Cup eliminated at the first stage but as in previous years our ante-post record overall is phenomenal! an't see too much this week but Ayamzabeauty ran an encouraging race at Hove last week and I would hope she can go one better this Thursday.
