Monday 20th April 2009

The season is well and truly warming up now with the Blue Square Greyhound Derby less than two weeks away and with the kennel on a high we couldn't be in a better mood going into this year's event. This Tuesday's William Hill Blue Riband Final worth £10,000 to the winner at Hall Green features no less than half of the field from our kennel and with the unbeaten and flying Jogadusc Ace in scintillating form an even money favourite with some bookies and the back to form Goldcrest King as well as Hall Green specialist and laid out Mountjoy Ruby making it three another Category 1 winner looks a distinct possibility. Also on Tuesday important Derby Trial Stakes are being staged at Wimbledon and with the entries closing the following day we will be interested how some of our less exposed dogs like Directors Fire, Eye Eye Pickle, Kinda Easy and Eye Onthe Pulse perform. The betting to see how many entries for the premier classic Wimbledon will receive is strange as 10-1 for less than 140 seems huge considering the current climate . My feeling is that it will just creep over the 160 mark all in all and we are expecting to have 11 or 12 in the hat for the first round.

Goldcrest Lord landed our 100th open race winnerGoldcrest Lord of the year last Wednesday at Harlow which i'm told is the quickest time ever achieved to reach this figure by a couple of weeks and with some good competition wins this year already we sit at the top of the Trainers Championship standings with a healthy lead and one we are not going to give up lightly. Although long term injuries in recent weeks to the likes of Kinda Free, Directors Ruler, Congo Invader, Eye Onthe Tempo, Eye Onthe Class and Sligo Too have been a blow we are still hopeful that some of our up and coming pups can burst on the scene but I will most certainly be searching in the next few weeks for some new blood to strengthen the team for the rest of the year.

OPEN RACING

Tuesday's semi finals of the Blue Riband at Hall Green produced a 1-2 for the kennel when Jogadusc Ace made it four on the spin for his new owners when leading all the way to beat litter brother Mountjoy Ruby, who ran well, by 1 1/2 lengths in 28.29. In the second semi final Eye Onthe Brave was a shade unlucky when running up the back of leader Lenson Express off the second bend losing a vital length which cost him as he finished 4th beaten just over 2 lengths in 28.40 but more importantly lost out by only 1/2 length for qualifying for the final. The third semi saw Goldcrest King favourite and although he was led up by Toosey Blue he had the measure of that rival by the 4th bend eventually pulling away to score by 2 1/4 lengths in 28.46 (-10) to secure three finalists for the kennel.

On Wednesday morning a pre Derby trial session at Wimbledon gave a few of our hopefuls a work out with Eye Eye Pickle (27.82 calc) impressing the most but also good trials from Kengyelfuto Snow (27.83 calc), Roswell Startrek (27.87 calc) and Kinda Ready (15.54 calc). At night no luck for Bomber Bailey in a hurdle open at Harlow but Goldcrest Lord ran out an impressive winner in the 415 Standard scoring by 2 1/4 lengths in 26.08 to give the kennel its 100th open race winner of the year. On Friday at Romford the Golden Sprint semi's saw Kindred Sparky eliminated when 4th in a scrappy affair won by Prematurus in a moderate 24.87 (-30). Goldies Tara is a pup that dosen't know how to run a bad race and duly won a warm 400m Puppy race leading all the way by 2 lengths in 24.61 (-30).

On Sunday at Coventry Droopys Zach won another hard earned victory when catching long time leader Droopys Nelson right on the line in a fast 39.15. Genesis Dream having her first run for three weeks showed great pace and returned to the winner's rostrum when dropped back to four bends scoring by a length in 29.40 (+10).

HARLOW REVIEW

On Wednesday Genesis Fuzzums was beaten a length in 26.48 before Rockybay Class beat kennelmate Genesis Gemstone 1 1/4 lengths in 26.70. Ragga Diva was 3rd but Zigzag Ellen, who was unlucky when leading the week before when the hare broke down, made no mistake scoring by 1 3/4 lengths in 26.47. Scintillas Ruby should come on for her first race out of season when 4th. On Saturday Lord Pishy scored his second win leading at half way by 1 length in 26.37 (+15). Princess Organa also came from behind to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 26.38 (+10) and Treacle Express was impressive on her debut leading at the first bend to win by a length in 26.31. Wilson Pick It scored an overdue victory beating kennelmate Imperial Prize by a head in 26.80 and Notanothersecond made it five winners on the night when taking an A4 by 2 1/4 lengths in 26.30.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK

GRADED RACING - TREACLE EXPRESS

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK

Feature race of the week is the live on Sky Sports William Hill Blue Riband Final at Hall Green on Tuesday with Jogadusc Ace, Goldcrest King and Mountjoy Ruby bidding to go one better than last year for the kennel when Commander Chief was runner up. A few other runners on the card should give us plenty of interest while at Wimbledon on the same night the last Derby Trial Stakes take place and we are represented in all five with Eye Eye Pickle looking to follow up on his last Sky win at the track. Opens at Harlow Wednesday and Romford Friday when also the heats of the Peterborough Puppy Derby take centre stage where Goldies Tara, Goldies Destiny, Bumble Lee, Risky Sensation will be amongst our entries/ Opens at Coventry on Sunday complete the week.

WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS

Goldcrest King advised at 12/1 last week for the Blue Riband should give us a good run for our money but needs to come in the first three to get paid. With plenty of open runners on Tuesday I think our best bet can come in the shape of our Hungarian import Kengyelfuto Snow at Hall Green though the three box is a concern. The Peterborough Puppy Derby kicks off on Friday and our most experienced runners are all wide runners something that can be a bit of a handicap so tight railer Bumble Lee could prove a spot of value ante-post, winner of two of his three races he is open to improvement.

KENGYELFUTO SNOW
- 4 pts win - Hall Green - Tuesday

BUMBLE LEE - 1 pt e.w ante-post - Peterborough Puppy Derby - Friday

ADVISED LAST WEEK

GOLDCREST KING - 2 pts e.w ante-post 12/1 - Blue Riband - Tuesday - Hall Green
