Thank you for all the texts, messages and kind words said about my Assistant Trainer Pete Vernon who leaves us at the end of the month after 14 years at Imperial Kennels. Pete is highly respected and regarded in our industry and will be hugely missed. We have advertised in the Racing Post last week for a suitable replacement and will run the ad again this week and start to interview applicants soon, anyone wishing to apply must do so by the end of the week by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Another excellent week on the track with 8 open race winners from 21 runners. On Thursday we had a superb treble on our first visit of the year to Hove with Billys Bullet most impressive in landing a very warm top division of a Regency trial stake in a fast calculated 41.02 . Earlier Aayamzamodel recorded our 100th open race win of 2015 when winning over 515m.
On Friday Adageo Bob again put some useful 575m dogs to the sword when scoring by over 9 lengths breaking 35.00 again on a slow track.
In some tough Arc heats on Saturday Domino Storm won well and over at Towcester a stunning performance from Ballymac Sinbad who landed the Mark and Derek Maiden Puppy final in a fine 28.20, he looks a real Derby prospect.
On Sunday Aero Babooshka showed again how much she loves Henlow as she took the Super Sprint semi final in good style and after a short break Vanfrenchie returned with a fine win over 550m. We are bowling along this year with a scintillating 38% strike rate which surely will slow down but until then we will enjoy a great spell.
We are just over a month away from the William Hill Derby and the huge amount of interest currently being shown is not surprising given the fact that a 250k carrot is being dangled in front of owners' and trainers' faces, however with entries looking likely to reach 250+ the GRA will face a real dilemma. The ideal number of entries to go to the traps in the first round is 192, that will ensure that 3 go though to the next round while 3 will be eliminated. Owners find this perfectly acceptable but if we get in a situation where we see many heats with only two qualifying this will be a real slap in the face for owners who for many just qualifying in third place is their Derby. Many people have said they would like a qualifying round even if it means up to four qualifying which makes sense to me but the GRA are worried about the extra expense of putting on extra meetings which seems petty to me. The other way is to just allow the top 192 fastest times as in the case of a couple of other competitions with the ones behind standing by as reserves but this method doesn't seem in the spirit of the Derby. I'm sure if we knew a qualifying round was going to happen I may decide to enter the kind of dogs who might go a round or two but these wouldn't be worth an entry if you were going to have just two go through.
On Tuesday in trials at Romford we had some stars on the way back from injury like Greyhound Of The Year Cornamaddy Jumbo, Aero Nemesis and Aero Twizzle who all went well.
On Thursday we had a good night at Hove. Reel Shirty took a decent maiden sprint in a good 16.15, Aayamzamodel was our 100th open race winner of 2015 when taking a 515m in 30.11, and Evanta De Leon ran well enough when third in a Regency trial stake while in form Billys Bullet rattled up another win when beating a high class field in 41.04.
On Friday at Romford What A Laugh was runner up over 400m and in the heats of the Dual Distance event over 575m Black Francis did well to qualify when second to Bubbly Time. Adageo Bob despite running from an awkward trap 4 slot made light work of his opponents winning by over 9 lengths in 34.99 on a slow track.
At Swindon on Saturday the Calne Racing Arc heats, Evanta Evita flew out but just got done at the first bend but battled on well to finish 2nd with Calco Flyer finishing 3rd. Domino Storm railed well to land her heat in 28.61 with Blonde Nipper finding trouble at the first bend when eliminated. Roswell De Niro was a bit unlucky when badly baulked at the first bend when in a good position while Aayamzaone broke really well in her heat and turned second but ran out of puff off the last bend and also crashed out.
At Henlow on Sunday Blue Moment's winning run came to an end but lhe ost nothing in defeat to track record holder Mays King. In the Super Sprint semis both Evanta Fantasy and Ilewin Allot ran ok but went out of the event but course specialist Aero Babooshka won her heat and lines up in another final next Sunday. Vanfrenchie returning from a rest ran very well when overcoming first bend traffic and won well over 550m.
Two winners on Friday from our 10 runners. Nimrod Son missed his break but still led off the second bend to score well in 28.84, Ribble Rush in only her second race was very impressive winning by 4 lgths in a fine 28.86.
On Saturday some reasonable runs with only Westway Pearl winning when scoring well on her debut for the kennel in a good 28.79 and on Sunday Energize Fred followed up last week's success when winning by a short head in 15.91. Billis Blitz took an 8 dog race in 28.81. Airforce Venus had her consistency rewarded with a victory in an A2 in 28.69 and Do It For Twiggy returned to winning ways in an A3 in 28.46.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
The Arc semi finals are this Wednesday at Swindon and we will return to Hove on Thursday.
On Friday Black Francis has trap 3 in the Dual Distance final at Romford and on Sunday Aero Babooshka takes on good sprinters in the Henlow Super Sprint final.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Domino Storm and Evanta Evita got our Arc recommendations off to a good start on Saturday and I see no reason why both couldn't make the final.
On Friday Black Francis can overturn some fancied runners in the Dual Distance final over 750m at Romford and is worth an interest.
