Monday 24th March 2008

Tuesday night's Trainers Championship meeting at Wimbledon was for the large audience watching, a great night's entertainment and firstly congratulations to Seamus Cahill and his team for winning in a thrilling finish. The night though for our kennel was in stark contrast to the previous Sky meeting at Walthamstow where we celebrated winning the main prize of the night; many of our runners failed to get round the bend unscathed and despite big runs from Missed A Train and Eye Onthe Force who were both runners up in their respective races the night was overshadowed by the injuries to two of our stars. Butterbridge Ali sustained a broken metatarsal and will be out of action for a few months while the career of Arc hero Centaur Decree hangs in the balance with a badly torn gracillis after he was beaten a distance in the last leg. We will keep everyone informed of their progress.

A big reminder that next Sunday at Harlow there is a great fun day of activities including a football match between Walthamstow and a Harlow eleven kicking the day off at 11 o clock followed by a top day's action on the track with opens and inter-tracks. A charity auction after the racing features some top sporting memorabilia and to cap the night off I have organised a poker tournament with a £30 re-buy, 10% of the prize pot going to charity - registration from 6 pm.

Something else to look out for is the second part of Five To Follow winner Peter Whates' greyhound tales which is now up to read on the Guest Column and one word to describe his articles 'brilliant', thanks Peter!

OPEN RACING

The opening race of the Trainers Championship meeting set the tone for the evening when Eye Onthe Veto, after breaking well, lost his position and despite only being beat a couple of lengths he was back in 5th behind Secretariat in 27.78, Obafemi ran well in the sprint but could only finish 4th behind Thai Girl who broke the track record in 15.23. Missed A Train produced the best performance by our runners on the night when a close second to the gambled on Lethal Freddie in the puppy race beaten 3/4 length in 27.74. Butterbridge Ali's fifth in the Stayers was put in context when it was revealed he ran a whole lap with a broken metatarsal. Directors Chair was so unlucky with a bullet break he just failed to make the bend and was smothered and trampled on and was left tailed off but thankfully in one piece behind impressive Toosey Blue in a fast 28.66. Eye Onthe Force was second behind Charlie Lister's Rossacredibility beaten 4 1/4 lengths and looks a real Derby prospect with the way he runs the track. Aero Blackjack was carted wide at the second bend in the top division of the stayers and that cost him the race as he only lost by those couple of lengths as the race was won by Big Brett Coal and finally with nothing to play for Centaur Dercee sadly was injured in the last race won well by Blonde Jeanie. On the same night Seanis Lad was very unlucky as he failed to get any kind of run in the semi-final of the Pall Mall at Oxford and could only finish 3rd.

A trip to Harlow on Wednesday, although not producing any winners, had both Roswell Zodiac and Lockdale Duke running well to be second in their 415m races while Genesis Sister didn't stay the 769m when being caught by top local Transtown Mul on the run in. Bell Classic was beaten in a photo for qualifying in the Novice Stayers over 592m.

Thursday's open race card was filled with good quality not least two Westmead Hawk pups who won both divisions of the Puppy 475m from our own dogs. The first Westmead Osprey, having his first ever race, beat both Castlemary Podge by 1/2 length with the unlucky in running Lockdale Diamond in third. In a very warm top division Westmead Diver impressively beat our Rockburst Mason by 4 lengths in 28.98 (-20). Genesis Jose continues to find one to good as he again was second beaten only 2 lengths by the improving Bitofamonkey in 40.07 (-20). Eye Onthe Flame won his third hurdle race from 6 attempts and his first open when getting the better of Billsdad Bill in 30.05 (-20) by a head. Like Hot Cakes was ko'd in the 640m stayers but seems OK and it was nice to see Genesis Alix in top form as she demolished her 835m field by over 5 lengths in a good 53.15 (-40). A better night for the kennel was completed when Treacle Rose ran a gutsy race to win the top division of the bitches 475m in 29.07 (-20).

Good Friday's jamboree with Coral's enhanced prize money was making me think why we didn't have more open race dogs available as there were good Championship points to be won not least in a warm £2,000 one-off over 575m which Genesis Dream ran well but was only 4th behind Barnfield Slippy. Centaur Cappo was our only other runner and in a thrilling finish in the 750m Maiden Marathon just got up in the last strides to win in 49.24.

WALTHAMSTOW REVIEW

Monday and Tuesday's handful of runners were nearly all second and third with Toasting Jack (2nd) coming closest on Monday and Freedom Man running well again when leading to the run in before being caught by Bling by 2 lengths in 29.05 and Centaur Elise was beaten by the minimal distance.

Saturday saw Jonos Patience open his account with a fluent victory over kennel mate Centaur Fuzzoms by 2 lengths in 29.42. Chilli Blue improved again beaten a neck in 29.32. The switch to Harlow in mid-week seemed to have worked the oracle with both Roswell Zodiac (29.02) and Lockdale Duke (28.91) as they won their races and So Said He is on fire! as he bolted up in 28.89.
