What a week in store for our kennel and greyhound racing fans in general starting tomorrow night at Sheffield with a brilliant Ladbrokes Trainers Championship. On Friday the Coral Golden Sprint Final at Romford is always a great occasion and Ilewin Allot could cause an upset if landing this prestigious Category 1 title. On Saturday the Ladbrokes Scottish Derby kicks off but we are unlikely to have runners travelling to Shawfield. Also on Sunday we expect to have a strong team for the Bunny Bookmakers Gold Cup heats at Henlow.
OUR LADBROKES TRAINERS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING TEAM
SIDAZ DIPPY . . . . . . . . . . . BENKAAT NERO . . . . . . . . . . . REEL SLIPPY
MURLENS CRASH . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HOMETOWN HONEY
AAYAMZAMODEL . . . . . . . . . . ADAGEO BOB . . . . . . . . . . REEL TRICKYONE
Let's start with the GTA Ladbrokes Trainers Championship at Sheffield. This event warmed up with the annual luncheon at the Napoleons Casino next to Owlerton Stadium where the six trainers taking part were present with the press, Sheffield racing office and invited guests. After a drinks reception the trainers sat down and announced their teams race by race and under the guidance of Jack Robinson (GBGB Steward) the draws took place. This was a new addition to the luncheon and seemed to add spice to the day. A lovely lunch followed and trainers gave their individual interviews to the press. The whole occasion was as usual special and I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Looking at the draws for our runners in the 8 races over various distances I was relatively pleased with the outcome, here are my thoughts.
Race 1 - 660m
Fear Emoski looked back to her best last Tuesday running riot in a decent race over 660m and a similar performance will see Charlie Lister get off to a flyer. Droopys Posh looks her chief threat while we have SIDAZ DIPPY who will certainly struggle to overcome a 13 length beating by Fear Emoski in last Tuesday's race over track and trip but she should make more of a fist of things here. Third or better will be what is required for us.
Race 2 - 480m
BENKAAT NERO comes into the race in the best form of his career and runs a track really well first time up. This is a tough race with only Chris Allsopp's Cluxtons Free seemingly without hope. Charlie Lister's Jordan's Brianna has to clear the fast up Magna Blaze while Underground Paul flew round in a trial last week and Chicago for Seamus Cahill has pace to burn and trap 5 might not be a bad draw. Nero somehow has to get in the first three for us or we could find ourselves behind at this early stage.
Race 3 - 500m Puppy
A class puppy race awaits us here and I know Paul Young is sweet on the chances of Jaytee China and his principal competitor seems to be the highly regarded Droopys Hawaii of Seamus Cahill's. Although we have plenty of nice puppies in the kennel they all lack age and experience to be thrown in the deep end in this event. Hopefully REEL BLISS can try and do a job for us. She is sure to go off a massive price but I have no doubt she could be a future staying star but our main objective in this race would be to at least make sure of more than one point ofr us. That's not being unkind to her, it's jsut a hard race!
Race 4 - 280m
A warm 280m sprint race containing some very fast dogs but more importatnly most are not natural sprinters. Barrie Draper's local hope United Leeds won well last week in a fast time and cannot be discounted and Chris Allsopp's Cape Impact. Charlie Lister introduces Southern Mesut and he blistered home in a trial a couple of weeks ago but again is not a natural sprinter. The inside duo of Brother John and Bubbly Rocket are very pacey around Romford but this is a different ballgame. MURLENS CRASH is probably the most improved open race dog in training and comes into this race in terrific form on a six timer. A plot draw on the outside must give us a fantastic chance of scoring maximum points which we wiill need as we are likely to be behgind at this stage.
Race 5 - 720m
The Championship would not be complete if Farloe Tango was not taking part and Charlie Lister's Greyhound of the Year will be a warm order to land the spoils. Golden Jacket heroine HOMETOWN HONEY maybe gives Farloe Tango a better chance because of her superb early pace as this ability stretches the field creating more space for Farloe Tango to weave his magic. Paul Young's Molly's Hope seems the only other realistic challenger.
Race 6 - 500m Bitches
Another great race containing some high class bitches. In this 6th race the break is crucial to everyone's chances. Jaytee Jules looks the likely favourite and Charlie Lister's Silverview Pinky appears badly drawn in trap 6. AAYAMZAMODEL has had this race in mind since winning the Peter Bussey Memorial and should step up on last week's good effort over track and trip and I am expecting a ping break from trap 4 and if Aayamzamodel does lead she will not be for catching. In my opinion our best bet on the card.
Race 7 - 500m
Highly thought of Sidarian Blaze for Charlie Lister makes his eagerly awaited debut and could have expected perhaps a tougher race though the draw in trap 4 means he will hve to be foot perfect out the traps. ADAGEO BOB could well step up on last week's effort over track and trip and our star of 2013 will expose any chinks in the armoury of Sidarian Blaze. A msut win race for us if we are to be triumphant overall.
Race 8 - 500m Dogs
A superb final race to bring the curtain down on this magnificent championship and it would be incredible if more than one trainer was still within touching distance of the title. Daddy Knowsbest for Chris Allsopp has upset the applecart in the past and cannot be ruled out. Jaytee Lightning in trap 2 is a classy performer while local hope Glenpadden Bolt for Barrie Draper will have his supporters. Seamus Cahill's Droopys Odell has great form at the track and is the recent Racing Post Juvenile winner where he won from trap 4 and will be a live threat to all. The draw in trap 5 for Charlie Lister's flying Redbrick Stuart is hazardous and he will do well to get across his other rivals. What better dog to represent our kennel in this final race than REEL TRICKYONE. His magnificent end of season form was one of the main reasons we clinched the Trainer of the Year title and he is sure to come on from last week's first race for two months. The draw out in 6 might be crucial and he looks set for a solo and wouln't it be sensational if Chris Richard's kennel star scored the points to win us the Ladbrokes Trainers Championship title.
Well there you have it, my thoughts on this exciting Ladbrokes Trainers Championship meeting. I'm certainly envisaging a glass half full scenario rather than a glass half empty one and if trends are right where we have won it every four years the last time beging in 2010 at Doncaster then this could be our year! The magnificent £10,000 prize to the winner will take some achieving but I have confidence in our team. The fact that I have left out the likes of Aero Twizzle, Jazz Tilly, Blonde Razor, Garryglass Rodge and Blackstone Marco amongst others is testament to our current kennel strength. Many of our owners and supporters will be cheering on Team Wallis but as long as our runners all come off safe and sound we will do our best to enjoy the occasion.
Good luck to our team and to our fellow trainers in opposition.
Once the Trainers Championoship meeting is finished the focus of our attention will turn to Friday's Coral Golden Sprint where Ilewin Allot has done remarkably well in making this Category 1 Final. His half length defeat to red hot favourite Lough Messi in Friday's semi final was a terrific effort and he deserves his place in the line up. With a little over a length separating the rest of the finalists it is a surprise that Ilewin Allot can be backed at around 12/1. He hasn't blossomed yet in the heats or the semis and the pinging box in 3 could well bring out the best in him and we go into the final in my opinion with a live chance.
I decided not to send runers to Shawfield for the Scottish Derby and instead use the Pinpoint Recruitment Arc at Swindon as a warm up event to the William Hill Derby. On Saturday Blackstone Marco (28.49) trialled exceptionally well at Swindon's Abbey Stadium circuit whilst Aero Nemesis is entitled to improve on his 28.80 trial where he beat Garryglass Rodge and Airforce Dynamo a length and 3/4. Garryglass Rodge will also improve and should be a real player when this event starts a week Friday. All four dogs will be entered in trial stakes this coming Friday.
I always enjoy my appearances on RPGTV although you do seem under pressure trying to find a few winners and somehow the topics got quite political when I was on last night. It is difficult to give proper answers out when put under the spotlight and of course it is easy to be highly critical of things beyond our control. Last night's show sparked 100s of emails to the show, most of which couldn't be read out because of time. I hope things get sorted out in the sport over the coming months. As I reiterate again we do have a wonderful product and one that can be very successful again the future given the right amount of funding. Despite all the doom and gloom it is great news hearing Towcester's plans to open by the end of the year.
A trip to Sheffield on Tuesday night unfortunately drew a rare blank for our kennel but most of the dogs should strip fitter and better when it really counts in the Trainers Championship meeting. For the record Fairest Royal (3rd), Lightning Zeus (3rd), Aayamzamodel (2nd), Adageo Bob (2nd), Reel Trickyone (2nd) all ran well.
At Romford on Friday Coosane Star was a shade fortunate when opening his account in a 400m maiden winning by 2 3/4 lengths in a moderate 24.89. Evanta Jack showed great promise when second in his maiden but Risky Pumpkin caused a little bit of an upset when winning the third of the maidens running very well to get up and score by 3/4 length in 24.55.
In the Golden Sprint semi finals our grand old servant Ayamzaman was again eliminated at this stage but it has to be said he did cause his own downfall when turning sharp right into trap 4 out of the traps hampering himself in the process. He still showed some of his old pace eventually finishing third. As said Ilewin Allot ran an absolute blinder at big odds to qualify in the second semi just beaten by hot favourite Lough Messis by half a length in 24.31. Aero Twizzle was strongly fanced by ourselves and out of the traps a bullet break looked as if he had justified our expectations but the trap 2 runner Mays Teejay came out with him and denied him that all important rails between the first and second bend allowing Jim Daly's Barntick Dupree to sweep round and win the race with Aero Twizzle ending up an unlucky third.
At Henlow on Sunday night in a trial before racing Blonde Razor just picked up nice young pup Blue Moment to score by half a length in 27.98(-20) and in races Benkaat Blue, having his first race since picking up a small injury, ran really well when second to Westmead John. With the Bunny Bookmakers Gold Cup starting next Sunday Ilewin Frimley was a touch unlucky when only 4th over the 550m. A missd break cost Jazz Tilly dearly when she was strongly fancied to win her 5050m race but still ran well in defeat when second to Savana Roberto. Adageo Brae made sure we didn't go home empty handed and battled gamely to land the last race by half a length in 34.04.
Hillcross Kansas was surprisngly 4/6 to land a reasonable A2 but did so comfortably by 2 1/4 lengths in a winning time of 28.38(+20). Firstly Saffrons Champ and later on the card Domino Storm(2nd) showed good pace in their races and both look like they will be winning shortly. Evanta Candyman was completely taken out at the first bend when holding a good position and is another one who will not be far away from winning.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
The annual Ladbrokes Trainers Championship Meeting is the feature of the week and all roads will lead to Sheffield tomorrow night. Six trainers, eight races and this superb variation on the standard competitions should make compulsive viewing and after the results this year of our kennel who knows it may well be a glorious night. Also on the card Lightning Zeus runs in the heat of the Coors Light Queen Mother Memorial Cup over 660 metres.
On Friday the Coral Golden Sprint Final sees Ilewin Allot represent our kennel in this presitigous Category 1 event and the supporting card will no doubt be its usual high standard. As well on Friday night we travel down to Swindon with important trial stakes for the Pinpoint Recruitment Arc with Blackstone Marco, Aero Nemesis, Garryglass Rodge and Airforce Dynamo all expected to be entered.
On Sunday we could be returning to Sheffield for the final of the Coors Light Queen Mother Memorial Cup and we will definitely be at Henlow for the heats of the Category 2 Bunny Bookmakers Gold Cup and as well as Jazz tilly, Adageo Brae and Ilewin Frimley we will also be entering Blonde Razor, Bridge Bandit and Aayamzamodel ensuring a strong team.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
I do feel our team for tomorrow night's Ladbrokes Trainers Championship Meeting at Sheffield has a reasonable chance of victory and at 11/2 we would be silly not to have something on and a small bet is required. For those who are playing on Betfair I do think the first three races are our toughest so our price may well drift out and it could well pay to take a small punt at likely juicy odds with the reason being races 4, 5, 6 and 7 are our best chances of the night. I feel also a scan of the morning odds on the betting witout Charlie Lister at our likely price of around 6/4 should be the professional's bet and is worth our followers latching onto. I see Aayamzamodel as our best single of the night.
The Coral Golden Sprint on Fridy in my opinion is more open than the betting suggests and Ilewin Allot at 12/1 is a smashin ge/w bet.
We are sure to be very strong in the Bunny Bookmakers Gold Cup at Henlow starting Sunday and if there are any ante post prices on show both Jazz Tilly and Blonde Razor as well as Aayamzamodel should all go close and a punt on all three to win should pay better than 2/1.
