Monday 26th May 2008
This year's Greyhound Derby dream for our kennel is over for another year when Commander Chief and Seanis Lad crashed out in Saturday's Semi-Finals at Wimbledon. Both dogs though can be proud of their achievements in the event and look to have bright futures. Commander
Chief will be aimed at the Sussex Cup in July and Seanis Lad will be one of a strong team that our kennel will send to Sunderland for the William Hill Festival next month but first they will take their chance in Saturday's Derby Consolation on the sport's biggest occasion - Derby Final night. Also running on what promises to be a fantastic card is our potential superstar over six bends Aero Blackjack and last Thursday he brilliantly added the Duffy Group Test trophy to the Stewards Cup trophy that he won in March after a scintillating burst of early saw him romp home by nearly 4 lengths in an awesome 39.54 (-30). Aero Blackjack's victory and a cracking night for the kennel at Romford on Friday (8 runners - 4 winners and 4 seconds) has seen us stretch our lead at the top of the Trainers Championship which is something that we will be firmly committed to for the rest of the year despite all the negativity surrounding Walthamstow's closure.
Walthamstow's gala night for the retired dogs still goes ahead on June 7th and I strongly urge all owners if they could to support this event by way of race sponsorship (£1,000, £500 or £300) or by buying a table in the Goodwood Lounge (tickets cost £40 a head) or just by buying a few raffle tickets. Please get in touch with myself or Mick Faithfull (01277 655803) or Barrie Clegg (0208 529 3286). Unfortunately our kennel's Five to Follow competition that was due to start in July has been postponed because of Walthamstow's closure in August but we will look to do something on a similar line later this year. Our kennel party for our owners that is scheduled for June 22nd hopefully will still go ahead and invitations will be going out shortly so please keep this date free!
No luck on Monday at Romford when Moolooolaba and Centaur Iris failed to qualify from the heats of the Coral TV Marathon over 750m and on Tuesday's Sky card at Wimbledon, featuring the Derby quarter finals, Commander Chief ran a stormer when 3rd to Toosey Blue beaten by 1 1/2 lengths in 28.63 and Seanis Lad gave us two semi-finalists when he bravely chased home Kryptonite going down by a 1 3/4 in 28.80. Although we had no winners on the supporting card Scintillas Ruby (2nd), Genesis Alix (3rd) and Like Hot Cakes (3rd) all ran well.
At Walthamstow on Thursday a good card supporting the Duffy Group Test Final brilliantly won by Aero Blackjack as mentioned above also saw a debut win over six bends for Elusive Tuesday when she took the Novice Stayers by a neck in a calc 40.34. Winners were a bit thin on the ground but some good performances were put up by Eye Onthe Brave who got in all kinds of trouble from trap 3 before being beaten a neck in 29.53 (-10) in Div 2 of the 475 Maiden and despite Genesis Dream going off at 4/7 she did nothing wrong when getting caught close home by 1 1/4 lengths in 40.02 (-30) by the strong running Pennys Victor. Directors Ruler nearly landed Div 1 of the 475m Maiden but just got collared on the line beaten a head in 29.43 (-20) by Swift n Great.
At Romford on Friday Rockburst Mason making his debut over six bends came from last to first to catch long time leader Fear Becks close home in 36.12 (+20) in a 575m Maiden and in Div 3 of the Stayers 575m Millwards Summit found plenty of trouble before finishing second to Get A Grip beaten 3/4 length in 35.97 (+20). In the puppy 575m Roswell Gemini ran well when leading at the first bend and then holding off Westmead Tommy to score by 3/4 length in 36.18 (+20) for a debut open win. Eye Onthe Force completed a treble at the track when landing Div 2 of the 575m Stayers after a tussle with Lethal Luxury eventually getting the better of his rival to win by a length in 35.68 (+20). Roswell Zodiac was a big priced 2nd to Lambstown Hill in a warm 400m Standard beaten 2 lengths in 24.20 (+10) and in the top division of the 575m Stayers Directors Chair made no mistake when winning by 4 1/4 lengths in a fast 35.41 completing a four timer for the kennel. Eye Onthe Spirit was runner up in the 750m Maiden Marathon beaten 2 3/4 in 48.14.
A Wimbledon on Saturday all eyes were on the two Derby semi-finals and after Tyrur Laurel had won the first semi our attention was focussed on Commander Chief and Seanis Lad going in the second semi-final but for the first time in the event Seanis Lad made a hash of the start and his chances had gone and when Commander Chief got tangled up at the first bend with Barnfield On Air it was all over despite the dog's brave efforts to get back on terms he just failed by 3/4 length to get that all important 3rd place behind winner Loyal Honcho.
At Monday's Bags meeting Directors Vision went down 3/4 length in 29.15 and Special Roxi came out worst of three in a photograph beaten a head and a short head in 29.42. In the last race of the day tragedy struck when Arch Honcho was bumped at the first and lost his balance when knocked over resulting in a serious injury that needed him to be put to sleep and our heart goes out to the owner Peter Symonds but thanks to Sid and the track vet Richard Lockyer on their professionalism in making sure the pup didn't suffer.
On Tuesday's graded card Thankyou Les Kid was second on her debut beaten 3 3/4 length in 29.84 (+10) before Mountjoy Snowie landed an A8 in great style winning by 4 3/4 lengths in a rapid 29.14 (+10) going well clear to the drop. Kinda Flashy is making a habit of finding trouble but showed great pace when only 3rd to Denwood Star beaten just under 2 lengths in 29.29 (+10) and Jonos Patience led to the run in before getting caught on the line to be beaten two neck's in 3rd in 29.23 (+10). Stride On Babe, having her first run back from season, blew the co webs away with a good run only getting caught on the run in by the promising pup Droopys Divine in 28.88 (+10) and she should come on for the run. Coolanga Flyer made it three wins from four when scoring convincingly by 3 1/2 lengths in the S1 in 40.18.
Ballyfinn Swift followed up last week's win when just taking a good P7 on Saturday's card by a short head in 29.38 (+10). The promising Kinda Classic looks a potential star in the making when landing a decent A6 coming from behind by 2 lengths in a good 29.09 (+10) and Chilli Blue beat kennelmate Lockdale Lady by 3 1/2 lengths in 29.31. Pinewood Evo recorded a 4.88 split when racing in to the lead but just got done on the line beaten a head in 29.24. Centaur Iris led all the way in scoring an overdue success by 3 lengths from Bell Tempest in 40.31, Toasting Jack defied his odds of 10-1 to land an A4 in 29.32 by the minimal distance and Centaur Cappo made it six wins on the night for the kennel when taking the S1 by 2 lengths in 40.39. Treacle Rose (2nd) and Centaur Deetee (2nd) both ran well and should win in the near future.
