Monday 5th May 2008
The Blue Square Greyhound Derby kicked off on Friday evening with 140 entries and all the connections were dreaming of glory in 4 weeks' time when the premier event reaches the final stage. We had the most entries of any kennel with 10 in all, 7 of which competed on Friday and 3 on Saturday. The first heat was typical of the quality with recent Blue Riband winner Farloe Reason beating one of the many potential Irish stars Advantage Johnny with our own Eye Onthe Veto (4th) showing real guts to qualify from a bad draw in trap 4. So it continued with superstars winning like Melody Pet, Toosey Blue, Blonde Jeannie, Barnfeild On Air and Catunda Harry to name a few. It was also nice for us that we finished with a winner courtesy of the in form Commander Cheif and in all 6 of our 7 strong team all made it into the hat for the second round with only the unlucky Eye Onthe Force eliminated. On Saturday an array of canine talent won their heats including the likes of Tyrur Kieran, Kilkenny Longjack, Tyrur Rhino, Mustang Garcia, Droopys Wells, Droopys Maestro and Barnfeild Slippy among the most impressive but unfortunately two of ours were knocked but with 7 from our 10 through we were overall pleased.
The Greyhound Derby was the main news this week, although on a busy open week there were some notable performances from the likes of the returning Directors Chair when second in a thrilling battle with the Sam Poots trained Barnfield Slippy on Hove's Sky card last Tuesday and Pinehurst Silk continued her incredible come back from serious injury when winning an open at Walthamstow on Thursday. Also Jonos Patience looks a pup on the up when scoring his first open win in the heats of the Peterborough Derby.
At Hove on Tuesday in the supporting races for the Regency final Genesis Alix ran well in the 740m when runner up to the impressive Swift Ninja beaten 6 1/4 lengths in 44.44 (-45). As mentioned above Directors Chair was just beaten 1/2 length by Barnfield Slippy in an excellent 29.94 (-30).
On Thursday's open card at Walthamstow Eye Onthe Flame, despite running well in the 475 hurdles, had no answer to Stevensrocket when he was beaten 3 lengths in a fast 29.02. Roswell Gemini ran well when 3rd in Div 2 of the Maiden, running on strong to be beaten just over 2 1/2 lengths in 29.08. Eye Onthe Brave, having his first race of his career in a warm puppy open over 475m, ran a bit green when 5th to Droopys Patty in 29.11 (-10) and Aero Blackjack bounced back from his elimination from the Regency with an authoritative win in the 640m Stayers by 4 lengths in 39.63 (-15). Directors Ruler was 3rd in Div 1 of the 475m Maiden beaten 4 1/4 by Blackmagic Jack in a fast 28.85 (-10). Pinehurst Silk showed blinding early (4.94 sec) as she held the running on Steady Scholes by 1/2 length in 29.01 (-10) to win Div 2 of the bitches 475m and in Div 1 Treacle Rose ran a good race when second beaten 3 1/2 lengths to the flying Murlens Dubh in 28.63 (-10). Chilli Cobra, in only his second race for the kennel, showed good all round pace to land Div 3 of the 475m by 1 1/4 lengths in 29.14 (-10).
On Friday the heats of the Blue Square Greyhound Derby got under way and in heat 1 Eye Onthe Veto from a bad draw looked bang in trouble when he was in bother at the first bend but to his credit he battled for his 4th place to be in the hat for round 2 as Farloe Reason took the heat in a fast 28.58. In heat 3 Eye Onthe Force's Derby campaign was over in round 1 when he was badly impeded at the first bend and was not able to recover and in the same heat Lockdale Diamond ran well to finish 3rd behind Toosey Blue who romped in by nearly 5 lengths in 28.54. Seanis Strike led up in heat 5 and, though it was a suprise that 10/1 shot Tyrur Jay won in 28.90, he qualified comfortably in 3rd. Seanis Lad showed blistering early to lead heat 6 but was caught close home by both Ninja Jamie and winner Ullid Connor in 29.13 with only a head and 1/2 length separating them. The young Scintillas Ruby showed good early to lead up and after she was challenged at the first and third bends kept on well to safely qualify in 3rd with Catunda Harry coming out on top in 29.11. In heat 11 the last of the night Commander Chief produced a fine effort catching the Irish trained Plough Lane on the run in to get up by a comfortable 3/4 length in 28.83 to send the kennel home happy with the night's work. On the same night at Peterborough the heats of the Puppy Derby began and Jonos Patience has taken to the track well and scored nicely in heat 3 by 1 1/2 lengths in 25.76 with Elusive Tuesday grabbing a qualifying place in third.
In the second batch of Derby heats on Saturday we faced mixed fortunes with Rockburst Mason qualifying in 4th behind Droopys Wells who won well in 28.72 but both Castlemary Podge and Missed A Train were knocked out.
On Monday's Bags card Notanothersecond got the better of King Jackson by 1/2 length in 29.70 (-10). Special Roxi was second in an A4 while Ants Gunner got back to winning ways by 3/4 length in 29.53 (-10). Centaur Gemstone held off Centaur Fuzzoms to complete another kennel 1-2 by a head to win in 29.38 and Toasting Jack (4.92 sec) showed good early to lead all the way and win by 1/2 length in 29.44.
An interesting Tuesday graded card with a few new pups from our kennel on display and on a slow track Mountjoy Snowie won well scoring by 2 lengths in 30.13 (-40). Centaur Iris was again second in an S2 beaten 1 1/4 lengths in 41.25 (-60) while Seanis Doire made a pleasing debut winning by 1 3/4 lengths in 29.85 (-40) and Arch Honcho ran well when runner up to John Coleman's Regal King beaten 1 3/4 in 29.90 (-40) and his turn looks just around the corner; as well as Centaur Lucky who missed his break but showed some real gears to finish an unlucky second to Ballymac Sound in 29.57 (-30). Bell Tornado ran a stormer in the A5 catching Robbies Hero on the run in to score by 1/2 length in 29.36 (-20) and in the S1 Twilight Fantasy led right to the wire before Centaur Cappo timed his run to perfection to land the spoils by the minimum margin in 40.80 (-30). Lockdale Lady, returning back from seasonal rest, ran well in 3rd in an A4 while Dan Daley's other runner Lockdale Duke is running at the top of his game beating a more than useful A1 field by 3 1/4 lengths with So Said He in second for a kennel 1-2 to wrap up a fine night for the kennel. Saturday's graded race results were not as good as Tuesday's with Discreet Cat (2nd) and Ortuna (2nd) both leading but getting caught the best efforts of the night.
