A superb night's action at Romford on Friday where the heats of the Coral Champion Stakes produced some thrilling action although it has to be said the bias towards the outside runners did somewhat have a big say on the results. Adageo Bob, the 7/4 ante post favourite, most likely didn't need any help with the conditions as he won convincingly for the 11th time over track and trip and stopped the clock in an incredible 34.71 just 4 spots outside Airport Captain's track record with Blackstone Marco qualifying back in 3rd. There's no doubt that Kevin Hutton's defending Champion Airport Captain and Adageo Bob currently the dog of the moment at Romford are the ones to beat at Romford but Reel Trickyone is the track champion having won the last two big 575m competitions at the track (Essex Vase/Coronation Cup) and he showed in a hot heat he is not going to relinquish his crown easily. Blasting from the traps he showed all his qualities that made him so tough to beat holding off the improving Jet Stream Duke to score by a length and breaking the magical 35.00 barrier with a 34.99.
In all we qualified five of our seven entries with Blonde Razor and Aayamzamodel both qualifying when 2nd in their respective heats on going that certainly didn't suit them. This of course meant inevitably that we would get our runners drawn against each other in next Friday's semi-finals and punters and racegoers will lap up the mouth watering clash of Adageo Bob, Reel Trickyone and Blackstone Marco all pitched in together. The last time Adageo Bob met Reel Trickyone was in the final of the Essex Vase where Reel Trickyone came out on top, the betting will most certainly suggest that that the form will be reversed, we will see!
The East Anglian Derby gets underway this week at Yarmouth and with £15,000 to the winner the event sees a good class line up. It was right back in 2005 when we last won the East Coast track's showpiece event when Fear No One blew his rivals away with a devastating turn of early pace and this year we have high hopes of repeating that. Aero Nemesis is running into form and should go well as should the early paced Domino Storm and Ilewin Allot while Benkaat Boomer has been prolific in top grade of late. Evanta Jack (on our For Sale page) has a tough heat while newcomer to the kennel Do It For Twiggy has exceptional pace and could go a long way.
Interesting news that Towcester has sold many of its horse racing meetings in order to put full commitment into their new greyhound business has to be a huge boost to the future of our sport. We are only a couple of months away from the track opening now and for many this whole project could be their last throw of the dice. I have no doubt that Towcester will be a massive success as the management in place are not only winners, they will listen to all people who will be a part of their business which unlike the rest of the sport will include owners and trainers.
Yarmouth staged a few East Anglian Derby trial stakes last Monday and Benkaat Boomer showed his love for the track when defeating Coolavaney Fish by a short head in 28.31 (-10). Both Aero Nemesis and Do It a For Twiggy on debut for the kennel ran well when 3rd, Ilewin Allot returned from a short spell on the sidelines to take the sprint race in 16.86 (-5)
At Hove on Thursday Rosealinda ran well in the Brighton Belle semi finals when 4th and Sidaz Dippy ran with great heart scoring by a head over 695m to make sure we didn't come home empty handed.
As said above a decent night at Romford on Friday night at Romford in the Champion Stakes heats.
There was decent debuts for Evanta Da Vinci (2nd), Lets Havit Right (3rd) and Aero Barbarella (2nd) on Wednesday with Evanta El Creco looking a proper dog to follow winning a good A2 in style in a fast 27.90.
On Saturday Toosey Parker was our only winner from five races leading all the way to score in 28.28.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
The East Anglian Derby kicks off on Wednesday and on Friday the semi finals of the Champion Stakes at Romford will take centre stage.
We will hopefully have runners at Henlow on Sunday where a few winners will be appreciated as I'm guesting on RPGTV.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Our e/w selection in the Champion Stakes Aayamzamodel did very well to qualify for the semi finals and we remain hopeful she can progress through to the final.
The East Anglian Derby kicks off this Wednesday and looking for a bet I have a feeling newcomer Do It For Twiggy can go a long way in the event, though only a pup still he possesses good all round pace and at 100/1 makes huge appeal.
DO IT FOR TWIGGY - 2 pts e.w ante post 100/1 - East Anglian Derby - Yarmouth - starts Wednesday
ADVISED LAST WEEK
AAYAMZAMODEL - 2.5 pts e.w ante post 33/1 - Coral Champion Stakes - Romford - semi finals Friday
