Review of 2015

Our exploits in 2014 with the likes of Cornamaddy Jumbo, Hometown Honey and Casheen Maureen was always going to be a hard act to follow in 2015 but boy! did we give it a good go. It's fair to say we totally dominated the Trainer Of The Year battle from start to finish and a fantastic 7th title looked in the bag as early as March. A plethora of open race winners resulted in us reaching the 100 mark by the 19th April at an incredible strike rate of 38%, that was never going to be maintained but what we did do for the last four months was rack up three memorable Category 1 victories.

billys_bullet_fd.JPGAfter a magnificent start where superstars like Billys Bullet, Blue Moment, Domino Storm, Evanta Fantasy, Vanrooney, Calco Flyer, Jimmy Nailed On and Black Francis were winning races for fun there is always a kick in the nuts around the corner. An unbelievable Trainers Championship meeting at Sittingbourne looked a certainty to be ours at the halfway stage until a magnificent four timer from Kevin Hutton snatched it away, no problem that's racing! and fair play to Kevin and his team but the real blow for us was seeing Billys Bullet go lame a month later when 8 lengths clear in his heat of the Regency at Hove. Thankfully he is now looking well after the badly broken hock was brilliantly repaired by Daniel Doherty and he may well return to his awesome best in the coming months. I've no doubt if this injury hadn't occurred this fella would have dominated the staying division and there would only be one winner of the Greyhound Of The Year award.

Pete Vernon my Assistant Trainer left our kennel in April for pastures new after 14 years great service and we wished him well in the future and my son Daniel decided to join us full time after he left school in June and he has been a real asset. A huge Derby entry from our team never really looked like we would add to our two Derby triumphs though Evanta Evita and Evanta  Fantasy deserved a lot of respect for being the two bitches going the furthest but their quest for glory ended at the quarter final stage.

clondoty_alex_fd.JPGTowcester was always in the spotlight but for me it provided stability with a healthy graded strength and new owners coming through. This stability allowed us to go in search of the big winners on the open race scene that we were possibly just missing out on and Patchys Kerry's glorious Champion Stakes victory in early September eased a lot of pressure and we never looked back. Swift Whirlwind, Domino Storm, Aero Babooshka, Calco Flyer, Evanta Evita, Black Francis, Reel Shirty and the emerging Clondoty Alex, RIbble Atom and Airforce Duchess kept up a magnificent strike rate and we were pulling well clear of our rivals. Indeed by December you could forgive us if we cruised home but no, we wanted to sign off the year with bang, a magnificent 1-2 in the EEC Timber Oaks led by the 'pocket rocket' Domino Storm who beat the gallant and loveable Evanta Evita had the greyhound world in awe of our kennel's achievements. Domino Storm epitomises what we can achieve and she rightly has the award of our Website Greyhound Of The Year she was brilliant all year!

Back to Towcester and my way of thanking them for all they gave us was to throw ourselves into the Bags Track Championship and we had some fantastic winners along the way like our Markwallisgreyhounds Racing Club star Saffrons Anna who was awesome at Yarmouth and Peterborough and step in Ballymac Shirley for the Nottingham and Towcester legs which helped Towcester to an easy group success. The Grand Finals at Perry Barr on the 23rd December will be a day I will never forget and I was as pleased with Ballymac Shirley and Ferryforth Fran's wins as any individual competition win. Ribble Aon's second place in a later leg was possibly the best runner up we have ever had and helped massively towards the memorable victory that was Towcester's and wow! did we celebrate, the cries of 'there's only one Lord Hesketh' sum the day up, superb!

Sadly the greyhound world lost one of its great supporters as popular owner Mitch Millward lost his brave battle against cancer and passed away in late October, truly a sad day. His send off was befitting of such a nice person and hopefully his Millward prefix will be around for as long as there is greyhound racing.

adageo_bob_stud.jpgThat brings me onto our final story and yes, save the best until last. Romford rightly named their end of the year showcase competition the Mitch Millward Essex Vase. I announced in the press that whatever his fate this would be ADAGEO BOB's last couple of races in a distinguished career. Despite a stunning record that elusive big Romford win had still hadn't come and many out there thought we were mad giving him one last go. Earlier in the year he had been 2nd in the Coronation Cup and 3rd in the Champion Stakes behind Patchys Kerry and most thought his chance had slipped away. His preparation hadn't been ideal but Bob won nicely in the first round and then his destruction of a decent semi final field suddenly had people sitting up and taking notice, he couldn't could he?? Yes he bloody could!! A magnificent burst of early pace in a top class line up saw him 3/4 length up as they approached the first turn, after throwing himself in the bend like a two year old he brushed aside his rivals and to a stunning roar from the terraces he emerged out the second bend 2 lengths in front. To be very honest the next 25 plus seconds was a lap of honour as he scorched round to an 8 length success with the crowd clapping and shouting 'easy easy'. Incredible scenes and the standing ovation at the podium standing with all our kennel staff and Bob's proud owners Dick & Ann Barfoot and their family was another memory I will never forget. What a way to go out, certainly worthy of our Website Performance Of The Year and maybe the training performance of my 12 years in charge at Imperial Kennels!

Below is the month by month blow of our season and at the bottom our website awards. That just leaves me to thank my wife Sarah, the backbone of our success, my staff - Sid, Luke, Daniel, Kevin and the support of Linda, thanks to my part time help Ron, Joe and Jamie and my daughter Emily and to our resident physio Ron Mills, thank you as always to Mick and Maureen who put together our superb website and of course a massive thank you to all our owners without whose support none of this success would be possible and lastly to our beautiful greyhounds in our care who never disappoint. Let's hope 2016 can be another great year!

Traditionally the season kicks off with the Coral Coronation Cup at Romford and we made a good start with a lightning fast win from BLONDE RAZOR (34.72). VANFRENCHIE was also impressive but ADAGEO BOB back from a couple of weeks off was caught on the run in after cramping and the same happened in the semi-final. He was spot on for the £5,000 to the winner final but was beaten on merit by an inspired Soviet Kenny in a very good 34.90 with VANFRENCHIE down the field.

We made a magnificent start to the year with winners a plenty and Towcester was proving fruitful on Thursday nights with plenty of open wins and our first final was landed courtesy of EVANTA EL GRECO in the £500 January Standard. Indeed BLUE MOMENT was the first dog to break the 28.00 barrier at the new venue with a scintillating victory in 27.94.

coranmaddy_jumbo_fd.jpgAs in form BILLYS BULLET marches into the Partex Marketing Prestige final we were off to the annual GBGB Awards bash at the London Lancaster hotel where as well as picking up a sixth Trainer Of The Year award CORNAMADDY JUMBO easily landed the hurdler of the year award and his amazing achievements of being the first greyhound in history to win all three major hurdle competitions in a year were recognised by him winning the coveted Greyhound Of The Year, a great night was had by us and all the connections.

The month couldn't get much better but it did as firstly BLACK FRANCIS took a minor final with the January Super Stayers at Towcester and then BILLYS BULLET just got up to win an exciting Prestige final and the generous  £6,000 first prize, wow! what a stunning first month of the year!

The winners kept flowing especially at Towcester where they moved the opens to a Sunday matinee meeting and DOMINO STORM set new figures for the 480 (27.84), as did sprinter CLOUDBURSTING (15.00), for good measure BILLYS BULLET (38.90) and VANROONEY (40.97) were the best figures (still holds up today) for the 655 and 686m trips. With plenty of wins at Romford and Henlow as well we reached 50 open race winners at a strike rate of 38% before the end of the month.

The big talking point came after months of speculation that the GTA Trainers Championship meeting was to be held at Sittingbourne with Len Ponder generously stepping in to stage the annual event under his 'Chelsea Glass' company. Quite extraordinary really that bookmakers weren't falling over themselves to sponsor this as it creates huge betting turnover and is one of the most watched Sky events of the year!

Another fine month as BLACK FRANCIS is an excellent 4th in the £17,500 to the winner Ladbrokes a Golden Jacket final while JIMMY NAILED ON made it an incredible four wins in consecutive years for the kennel when landing the Peter Bussey Memorial Trophy.

BLACKSTONE MARCO and BLONDE RAZOR are out of luck when fancied in the Bunny Bookmakers Gold Cup at Henlow with the going heavily favouring the wide seeds but EVANTA FANTASY shows her well being when winning the Steve Simmonds Standard Trophy at Romford and Domino Storm picks up the Sunday 500 Standard final at Towcester.

The Golden Sprint kicks off at Romford and we have a rare shock reversal as ante post favourite EVANTA FANTASY is eliminated in the first round, BILLYS BULLET is also desperately unlucky when just failing to catch Fivestar Clipper in the Category 2 Ladbrokes Festival Stayers final at Monmore.

blue_moment_fd.jpgNews that three of the invited trainers for the forthcoming Trainers Championship meeting drop out Charlie Lister, Pat Rosney and Liz McNair are out of the prestigious event but Seamus Cahill, Dean Childs and John Mullins make it one of the great occasions of the year, the night for us was one of massive swings and controversy as BLUE MOMENT is lucky not to be disqualified in the opening leg when 2nd which is followed by tremendous wins for SWIFT WHIRLWIND and BILLYS BULLET to give us a tremendous advantage where bookies are making us 'no offers' at the halfway stage. Despite our last four runners tying their best Kevin Hutton incredibly wins the last four races to take the title in dramatic fashion. Certainly one of the lows of the year for us with the fabulous prize money on offer, still a tremendously exciting evening at Sittingbourne.

We bounced back straight away with a plethora of open race winners and AERO BABOOSHKA made it a good end to the month when landing the Category 2 Henlow Mini Derby worth £2,500 breaking the track record (25.53) in the heats.

aayamzamodel_fd.JPGThe disappointment of the Trainers Championship was answered again at the beginning of April with some stunning runs around the country. At Sheffield on the supporting card for the Three Steps To Victory final we sent four runners and they all won AAYAMZAMODEL, SWIFT WHIRLWIND, CALCO FLYER and a track record for the 660m for BILLYS BULLET made it a great night. BLUE MOMENT showed what he was really capable of now under the ownership of my wife Sarah with a blistering 27.84 win at Towcester while ADAGEO BOB looked back to his best with a flying 34.68 at Romford.

My Assistant Trainer Pete Vernon announced he was semi retiring and leaving the kennel at the end of the month, Pete a popular character amongst the greyhound world worked for us for 14 years and is now working for my friend and ex Assistant Trainer Patrick Janssens.

We reach an incredible 100 open race winners on the 19th of the month and finished April off with a nice victories in the Derek & Mark Maiden Puppy Final at Towcester with BALLYMAC SINBAD and the Tony Williams Dual Distance Final with BLACK FRANCIS.

The Calne Racing Arc at Swindon is going well for us with EVANTA EVITA winning the semi final in good style and CALCO FLYER delighting his owners with a place in the final. The draw for the final is not so good with Evanta Evita in 6 and Calco Flyer drawn outside the pacey Millwards Whitey, neither escape trouble and EVANTA EVITA has to settle for second.

The much talked about Premier League kicks off at Towcester but with outside trainers basically snubbing it, apart from Barrie Draper, it's kept to mainly local trainers. In its defence the four races each month are hugely competitive and gives some decent prize money to both owners and trainers.

AERO NEMESIS bounces back to form with a stunning 23.59 success at Romford but it was to be his only win as he is retired the following month.

Disaster strikes the kennel as BILLYS BULLET breaks his hock when 8 lengths clear in a heat of the Coral Regency. Top vet Daniel Doherty performs major surgery and is hopeful of him returning to race again.

With a £250,000 carrot dangled in front of us we prepare for a huge entry for the forthcoming William Hill Derby, in all we are looking at 20 entries from our kennel alone.

parkers_poison_fd.JPGTom Kelly's controversial announcement that he is to take over from Maurice Watkins as the new CEO of the GBGB is met with mixed feelings in the greyhound world.

Our first bad patch of the year seems to be all about what happened to BILLYS BULLET. CALCO FLYER is a beaten favourite in the Trueframe Stud Book Trophy final at Nottingham and both PARKERS POISON and RIBBLE RUSH are down the field in the PCS Legal Puppy Oaks final at Towcester.

This month was all about the William Hill Greyhound Derby. With a massive 240 entries the first round could only be described as brutal as many heats saw only the first two go through. We had a mixture of entries, some strong some just OK and some very hopeful and of our 19 entries we perhaps were slightly disappointed only 7 made it through to the second round but there were three good wins for ADAGEO BOB (very popular on RPGTV) EVANTA FANTASY and EVANTA FANTASY.

Our interest in the Derby was evaporating fast with only three runners left after round 2 with EVANTA FANTASY and BLONDE NIPPER both winning very well, EVANTA EVITA also qualified.

Round 3 and our interest is still there as EVANTA EVITA runs a blinder to win her heat with EVANTA FANTASY and BLONDE NIPPER both qualifying comfortably, away from Wimbledon our winners are ticking over nicely and BLONDE RAZOR scores a well deserved success when landing the Rose Bowl at Romford.blonde_razor_fd.jpg

All three of our Derby quarter finalists are knocked out at this stage but came out of the competition with great credit. 2014 Greyhound Of The Year CORNAMADDY JUMBO's comeback race in the heats of the Champion Hurdle doesn't go to plan and he is lame the next day and is promptly retired but DOMINO STORM bounces back with a fine win in the heats of the Derby Plate while at Monmore SWIFT WHIRLWIND is runner up in the Ladbrokes Summer Festival Puppy Cup.

Danny Riordan's Rio Quatro lands the Derby final and we had a decent night as CALCO FLYER takes the British Bred race in fine style in 28.39 and DOMINO STORM gets great plaudits as she is at her scintillating best landing the Derby Plate in a brilliant 28.23.

JIMMY NAILED ON got our Sunderland Grand Prix off to a good start with a good heat win but was desperately unlucky in semi final. Again our winners were ticking over with DOMINO STORM (29.58) and CALCO FLYER (29.59) in fine form at Hove while we were also in great form at Romford with ADAGEO BOB still breaking that 35.00 barrier on a regular basis.

Towcester is entering a really busy period with the TV Trophy looming and REEL SHIRTY is a surprise package in the Sussex Cup and wins his semi final in good style. We re-route DOMINO STORM from Hove as she has invitation to the Select Stakes, she makes a bold effort where she is a fantastic 3rd behind the flying Swift Hoffman and Eden The Kid.

The month ended with another stack of open race wins and our brilliant strike rate for the year is still over 30%. Though REEL SHIRTY was out of luck in the Sussex Cup final there were excellent wins at Romford with EVANTA FANTASY (23.75), emerging marathon star RIBBLE ATOM does the fastest marathon time at Towcester meaning we now hold all the best times over every distance.

BLACK FRANCIS kicks the month of with another minor stake win in the Friday Night Dual Distance final and ADAGEO BOB is awesome again destroying a top class field by 12 1/4 lengths in 34.96 on a slow track. The Premier League continues and we are clear in the overall table and win 3 of the 4 legs for August.

Towcester was enjoying some massive summer crowds and the combination of the top class Lowther Stakes and TV Trophy gives the place a real buzz. DOMINO STORM and EVANTA EVITA both go well in Lowther and RIBBLE ATOM for Lord Hesketh makes the final of a high class TV Trophy.

swift_whirlwind_fd.JPGSWIFT WHIRLWIND steps up to six bends successfully and beats some useful rivals in the Doug Tyler Summer Cup at Romford and a brilliant night at Towcester where we win the first three races live on Sky. An excellent third in the TV Trophy final from our novice marathon runner RIBBLE ATOM as Irish raider Ballymac Bonny takes the honours. On the Saturday the Lowther Stakes final saw another huge crowd attend and EVANTA EVITA produced a brilliant effort to be runner up to the awesome Forest Twilight who smashed the track record in the process, DOMINO STORM got no sort of run from a poor draw in trap 4 and was last.

The Coral Champion Stakes kicked off with mixed results as ADAGEO BOB looked out of the event when missing his break but delighted the crowd with a last to first victory and PATCHYS KERRY looked a real player with a fine win but the much fancied SWIFT WHIRLWIND was eliminated.

Again ADAGEO BOB comes from behind to win his semi final of the Champion Stakes much to the roars of the large crowd and PATCHYS KERRY also runs well to make the final. AERO BABOOSHKA and AIRFORCE DUCHESS make the Brighton Belle final while at Towcester the Premier League is going well for us and an excellent win from DEANRIDGE ANGEL keeps us at the top of the leaderboard.

A momentous week for the kennel as we land our first Category 1 title of the year in the Coral Champion Stakes but not as the script might have said. ADAGEO BOB still not 100% but in great shape gets no sort of run as he tries desperately hard to land that elusive first big Romford competition win and can only finish a brave 3rd but PATCHYS KERRY runs a stormer to lead on the run in and win a memorable event for Frank Taylor.

The next night at Brighton we celebrated again in one of the races of the year as AIRFORCE DUCHESS gets up to nab AERO BABOOSHKA right on the line for a famous 1-2 in the Coral Brighton Belle final at Hove. At Yarmouth EVANTA EVITA is so unlucky from a poor draw in trap 5 not to make the East Anglian Derby final but CALCO FLYER scrambles home in 3rd to book his place in his 2nd Category 1 final of the year. He eventually finishes a good 3rd to ex kennelmate Do It For Twiggy.

A reasonably quiet month for the kennel as SWIFT WHIRLWIND was a touch unlucky in the All England Cup final at Newcastle when 4th. JIMMY NAILED ON was 2nd in the Great North Run and DOMINO STORM 3rd in the Angel Of The North Oaks though there was an excellent win for RIBBLE ATOM in the marathon just two spots outside our own Ayamzabella's track record

ferryforth_fran_fd.JPGBILLYS BULLET returns from serious injury and trials back well but word that Towcester is not to have their Bags contract renewed for 2016 sparks them into life at the Bags Track Championship with excellent legs at Yarmouth and Peterborough to leave them sitting handy in their group.

RIBBLE ATOM, JIMMY NAILED ON and FERRYFORTH FRAN all make the semi finals of the William Hill St Leger but the sport is rocked by the news that popular owner Mitch Millward had lost his battle against cancer. A hugely sad day for all the many friends he had in greyhound racing including myself who had got to know him very well since he had a couple of dogs with us back in 2007.

FERRYFORTH FRAN makes the William Hill St Leger final but is a 33/1 chance and finishes down the field while BILLYS BULLET continues his comeback trials while SWIFT WHIRLWIND lands the heat of the now reintroduced Gold a Collar at Crayford.

We are rocked by news of a positive test on one of our greyhounds Droopys Ford who ran at Towcester, his POR (point of registration) is also found to be positive thus indicating the drug had been administered well before he arrived at our kennel.

Mitch Millwards funeral sees a massive attendance of family, friends and a huge gathering from the greyhound world, the afternoon wake at Romford was a fitting send off to a great man.

ballymac_shirley_fd.JPGSWIFT WHIRLWIND having a fine season makes the recently reinstated Ladbrokes Gold Collar final and we have our first runner in Ireland for several years when RIBBLE ATOM finishes an excellent 2nd at Shelbourne in the Night Of The Stars Marathon. She stays over afterwards for a crack at the Track Bookmakers Marathon (formerly the Ted Hegarty Marathon) with my good friend Karol Ramsbottom.

In form BALLYMAC SHIRLEY wins her leg of the Bags Track Championship at Nottingham putting Towcester in a decent position going into the last leg at home, SWIFT WHIRLWIND runs very well in the Ladbrokes Gold Collar final but has no answers to the flying Corrin Bob.

airforce_anna_fd.jpgTwo big competitions kick off and we make a good start in both. At Romford ADAGEO BOB in his last competition before he retires takes his heat of the aptly named Mitch Millward Essex Vase as does SWIFT WHIRLWIND while at Belle Vue the EEC Timber Oaks see's litter sisters AERO BABOOSHKA and EVANTA EVITA both win their heats and DOMINO STORM and SAFFRONS ANNA qualify.

ADAGEO BOB is at his scintillating best as he destroys a top class line up in the semi final of the Mitch Millward Essex Vase in 34.78 just 11 spots outside his track record but now faces a ultra tough final in what will be his last race of his distinguished career.

At Belle Vue in the second round of the Oaks incredibly three of our top class bitches are pitched in together but a memorable 1-2-3 led by AERO BABOOSHKA  who beats DOMINO STORM and EVANTA EVITA see's them all qualify much to the relief of all concerned.

What a start to the month as one of the all time favourites, not only in our kennel but the sport, ADAGEO BOB powers to victory in an emotional Mitch Millward Essex Vase final (my blog on December 7th is well worth another read) sparking some brilliant and unforgettable scenes at Romford. An excellent night for the kennel as four of our five runners all win.

DOMINO STORM wins her semi final of the EEC Timber Oaks from an awkward trap 5 slot and EVANTA EVITA qualifies for the second year running while BILLYS BULLET is an excellent 3rd in his comeback race.

Towcester run riot in their home leg of the Track Bags Championship easily qualifying for the Grand Finals, BALLYMAC SHIRLEY is the star of the show making it 5 on the spin for the improving bitch.

That 'Carlsberg' moment came the very next week as DOMINO STORM and EVANTA EVITA give us a memorable 1-2 in the classic EEC Timber Oaks at Belle Vue, a brilliant trap to line victory for our pocket rocket and a superb defence of the crown for Imperial Kennels.

On a down side top open racer JIMMY NAILED ON broke his hock in a trial at Romford and is retired and at Hove DOMINO STORM chasing the Greyhound Of The Year title is desperately unlucky in the first round of the Olympic.

ADAGEO BOB is retired to stud at John Mariott's kennels near Rotherham and there is plenty of interest for him. Both EVANTA EVITA and AERO BABOOSHKA are retired to the breeding paddocks, they have been great servants to the kennel and the owners.

RIBBLE ATOM finishes a well beaten second at Harolds Cross but is not disgraced while at Towcester an excellent Sky meeting sees us have four winners from eight runners including two in the Premier League finals which meant we had won the overall  league but there is confusion as to whether we won on the night! In a hot six bend race BILLYS BULLET runs another sound race when a close up 4th.

bags_champions2015.jpgTo cap a stunning and quite brilliant month Towcester superbly win the Track Bags Championship Grand Finals at Perry Barr. Both BALLYMAC SHIRLEY and FERRYFORTH FRAN win their legs and their tremendous performances were matched by the scenes of joyous celebrations afterwards! quite brilliant!

SWIFT WHIRLWIND is our last open race winner of the year at Henlow but BLUE MOMENT and AERO BABOOSHKA are out of luck when 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Xmas Cracker final.
