Balterio was always going to have to do it the hard way if he was to land the Steel City cup at Sheffield on Saturday and predictably he was run off his feet early with so much early pace, crucially he was forced to check off the second bend but from the third he powered home but couldn’t get to the front runners finishing 4th beaten just over 3 lengths in 28.71. Surprisingly the favourite Signet Ace was caught after leading though his trainer Kevin Hutton was well compensated as his Forest Gold took the honours. Balterio looks a lovely staying prospect for next year.

The Category 1 Hunt Cup started on Sunday at Towcester with four cracking heats. In form Blueberry Bullet won her heat well and in the fastest time of the four 43.47, another bitch in form Antigua Lava produced a whirlwind finish to land the spoils in heat 2 in 43.73 by a short head while earlier Aayamza Dream was a short head 2nd to Night Time Baby where we saw Bombardier eliminated. The second semi final this Sunday is some race with Antigua Lava in trap 1 and Blueberry Bullet with a tough draw in trap 4.

We are undoubtedly facing the usual barrage of fireworks at the tracks over the weekend and Romford have sensibly called off their Friday night meeting where there is a big display organised close by the stadium. With our main meeting Sunday afternoon at Towcester a relief as we should be done and dusted before dark. I’m not going to enter anything in the evening meetings on Saturday and Sunday, the worry and stress that it can cause to greyhounds outweighs any financial gain we might have if we had runners, thankfully there are plenty of races in the daytime to get the majority of runners out.

This week is a real sad week for the sport as the news came through of the tragic death of the young and popular Jack Murrell, Jack was a passionate greyhound fan from a very early age and was well known around the country and especially at Romford with his close association with Paul Young's kennel. The media picked up on his passion for the sport and he became a RPGTV panellist winning the Naps challenge in 2016. More than that he was very friendly and popular with a number of owners, trainers and kennelhands across the sport including ourselves. I had the pleasure of seeing him at the race tracks and a number of social events the sport held, he was always so polite and unassuming and was a real character who had a great sense of humour and I genuinely wish I knew him better. Myself and all at Imperial Kennels send our deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

OPEN RACING

Just four runners at Romford on Friday with Antigua Socks qualifying for the 400m Standard final when second in his heat and Aero Activate running well when second in a puppy race.

On Saturday as well as Sheffield we had three runners at Monmore. Ballymac Odie was second in the 480m Standard final and Ivy Hill Skyhigh was also second when just touched off in a supporting 630m race. We didn’t come away empty handed when Call Me Tom won well on his sprint debut in 15.38.

The Hunt Cup at Towcester on Sunday saw heat wins for Antigua Lava and Blueberry Bullet with Aayamza Dream qualifying and over at Henlow we had a 1 -2 in the Maiden final over 550m when Coolavanny Kyser beat kennel mate Dallas Dolly by 2 lengths in a fast 33.39.

HENLOW REVIEW

No winners on Monday and on Saturday there was a debut win for Keats in an A7 in 28.13 and Sweet Pear took an A1 on her return from season in 28.00 though she was unfortunately marked awkward.
