Patchys Kerry, as expected, came on a bundle from her first round heat of the Pinpoint Three Steps To Victory at Sheffield on Tuesday, she simply blew her rivals away over the 500m trip clocking a sensational 28.49 just under a length off the track record. Now, in this unique competition, she goes into the six bend final over 660m a red hot favourite. It was hard to believe she drifted out to an unbelievable 2/1 in the semi final with massive support for her closest rival Mustang Chick but a slick break saw her 3 lengths ahead of the field at the first bend and she proceeded to gallop away from her rivals eventually coming home 6 lengths to the good, Clonkeen Snowy kept the distance respectable and Mustang Chick fell out and was back in 5th. The 3rd semi final saw Ribble Aon just miss out on a place in the final by a short head. Aon ran a blinder and in a desperate 4-way finish she was beaten just over a length but back in 4th.
Tuesday's £10,000 to the winner decider has thrown up plenty of talking points not least about the fact four of the finalists have serious doubts whether they would get the six bends but I see no problem with the format of the competition, many of the true six bend entries where eliminated at the four bend stages but this is what makes it interesting. We know Kerry stays as she has a Golden Jacket victory over 714 metres in February but with another hazardous draw in trap 4 and a very short run to the bend the final is fraught with danger, many people questioned her ability to win from trap 1 in the Golden Jacket and now the same question is posed for her from trap 4. Hopefully she will answer those questions with a smash break and if she did turn the bend in front it would take an incredible run from her rivals to beat her, even if she does find herself in trouble she could still outstay the other finalists if she had to I'm sure. It would be fantastic to see Frank Taylor's stunning looking bitch do the business again but we certainly are not counting our chickens etc.
We have plenty of runners on the supporting card including last week's excellent winner Calco Flyer who took the notable scalp of last year's Derby Finalist Making Paper in a supporting race for the semi's last Tuesday. Domino Storm is kept ticking over in a 480m race and after her demolition job at Towcester on Tuesday in the Mervyn Cross Memorial Bitches Invitation she is sure to be popular. In that race she produced a brilliant 4.04 sectional and only an excellent run from kennelmate Airforce Duchess kept the winning margin respectable, stopping the clock at a very good 28.01 (-20) she had 3 1/4 lengths to spare over Duchess. It was an great night and the generous sponsorship from the Ray Cross and his family was matched by their superb hospitality. Airforce Duchess also travels to Sheffield in the bitches race and another winner from Tuesday's Towcester card Ribble Atom runs in a stamina sapping 915m which should be right up her street. Rubys Rascal is a nice pup and trialled well (29.02) last week as is Ela Ela Genie (puppy sprint). Ribble Aon will be stretched over the 660m but if she led she could win but one notable absentee from the card is Billys Bullet who was badly spiked in a 660m race on Tuesday and faces around 10 days on the sidelines. The Regency is still his target as is Patchys Kerry and wouldn't it be nice for her to go into that event (starts April 21st) with a second Category 1 victory in 2016 to her name and a third overall!
It was an excellent week for the kennel where we sent out 12 open race winners from 29 runners including a nice little win last night at Henlow for Ballymac Shirley in a minor bitches event, that was her 4th victory from 6 starts this year and her 10th win from her last 12 races. We seem to have quite a few dogs who have had an excellent start to the year building up nice sequences :-
Ballymac Shirley .... 4 from 6 (67%)
Evanta Fantasy ...... 7 from 11 (63%))
Ferryforth Fran ..... 7 from 12 (57%)
Domino Storm......... 3 from 5 (60%)
Patchys Kerry ......... 6 from 9 (67%)
Saffrons Anna .........5 from 9 (62%)
Tellhimjohn............. 4 from 8 (50%)
We are already up to over 80 open race winners and our lead at the top of Trainer of the Year title is back to over 100 points and our search for a record eight title is swinging along nicely.
At last we seem to be getting to the back end of the cough that has raged through our kennel over the last month and many of our younger dogs are trialling back over the next few days so it's a busy time for the kennel. Two new intakes that are very interesting are Shutthe Backdoor and Ayamza Seve who have come in for a tilt at the Derby and both trialled well at Wimbledon on Saturday with Shutthe Backdoor beating Ayamza Seve by a length in a reasonable 16.43. Shutthe Backdoor ,a beaten semi finalist in the Irish Derby last year, has an excellent Irish card and should be suited to Wimbledon. Brendan Mathews has kindly sent him over and and he is trading at around 150/1 for outright honours.
A good night for the kennel on Tuesday as Patchys Kerry won her semi final of the Pinpoint Three Steps To Victory in a flying 28.49, Ribble Aon was an unlucky elimination. In supporting races Billys Bullet was beaten in 4th after bad first bend trouble over 660m but Calco Flyer showed his liking for the track with a well deserved win over 500m in a good 28.70. Over at Towcester Domino Storm was her brilliant best landing the valuable Mervyn Cross Memorial Invitation from kennelmate Airforce Duchess in a fine 27.81 calc. In the Towcester Racecourse Maiden final Saffrons Boxer backed into 5/4 completely missed his break and both he and Ginas Lad had to settle for minor honours behind Clover Dan. Earlier Cisberry Geo took advantage of trouble and nicked a 480m standard in 28.84 calc, RIbble Atom looked a class apart in the Marathon winning by 8 lengths in 55.89 calc, Ferryforth Fran was back on the winning trail scoring by 2 1/4 lengths in 39.64 calc and to complete a brilliant night Deanridge Madbye (formerly Madabout Marco) took the top division of the 480m Standard by 2 1/4 lengths in 28.49 calc.
On Friday at Romford KIlara Sweatpea caused a 12/1 surprise when catching kennelmate Alice My Angel close home to win by a head in 35.66 in a 575m Maiden. Evanta Fantasy took her heat of the Friday Night 500 Standard by 3/4 length in a fine 23.96 and Swift Whirlwind was back on the winner's podium beating Coronation Cup winner Millwards Master by a length in an excellent 35.18.
Ballymac Shirley gave us a kennel 1-2 when beating a game Saffrons Anna by 1 1/2 lengths in the Henlow Bookmakers Bitches Final last night clocking 27.57. In the Henlow Bookmakers Stayers heats over 692m Black Francis ran a fine race to win by 3 lengths in 42.91 (-20) though Sosaidhs Blue was all at sea around the track when favourite in heat 2 and eventually finishing 4th.
Just graded runners on Saturday and the inside runners, of which we had a few, looked as dead as can be with the outside running much quicker. Carden Punch and Nimrod Son were both second but we did sign off with a winner with Fearsome Folly taking off scoring by 3 lengths in a fine 28.47 calc.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
A big night at Sheffield tomorrow for the kennel with odds on favourite Patchys Kerry bidding to add to her already superstar status by adding the Pinpoint Three Steps To Victory Trophy to Frank Taylor's cabinet. Plenty of runners on the supporting card and a few opens at Towcester with the heats of a puppy event making hopefully another Super Tuesday!
Evanta Fantasy runs in a hot Friday Night 500 Final at Romford later in the week and on Sunday at Henlow Black Francis will look to win the Bookmakers Stayers Final.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Patchys Kerry is never a huge price ante post but all those supporters sitting with 7/2 vouchers to win the Three Steps To victory tomorrow night are feeling pleased with themselves as she trades now at around 1/3 for the final.
Ribble Atom was impressive at Towcester on Tuesday winning by 8 lengths and the shade of odds against early morning was snapped up! She could well go in again tomorrow at Sheffield and the 915m is perfect, again any odds against has to be taken. At a more realistic price I can see Airforce Duchess going well in the bitches race and is worth an interest.
