california_fd.JPGThe main feature of last week was the East Anglian Derby at Yarmouth on Wednesday and also on the night before the Betfred Steel City Cup semi finals at Sheffield. Our four entries at the east coast track where only a couple of years ago we were contracted at had mixed fortunes. Roswell Iceman couldn't extract himself from a poor draw in trap 4 and went crashing out the event at the first stage which was a shame as he had flown round in a preparation trial a couple of weeks before. Saffrons Anna was desperate as she ran on bravely after being badly balked as the traps opened (trap 1 moving middle) and just failed to qualify when beaten a short head for 3rd place. Clondoty Alex found a messy race and had to ride his luck before coming home second and we did manage to pinch a heat while California used his early pace and running the track much better than in trials won by a couple of lengths in 27.96. Both Clondoty Alex and California return tonight for two difficult second round heats. Over at Sheffield Calco Flyer looked out of the competition when finding trouble at the first and third bends but a gallant effort saw him fly up the home straight and grab that last qualifying spot.

Tomorrow the £7,500 to the winner Betfred Steel Cup final will be the 5th major final for Calco Flyer in what has been an excellent career to date and he is fast approaching 100 races. It's a massive ask to see if he can finally grab the glory but a draw in trap 1 is a positive and his army of owners and supporters will be there to support him. Calco Flyer has his own Facebook page which is always a giggle and is becoming famous worldwide! We have plenty of runners on the supporting card and Sheffield has been a lucky track for us over the last couple of years where we have a very good strike rate, hopefully that trend will continue.

Another big competition gets underway on Saturday as the Yorkshire St Leger kicks off at Doncaster. We went up there on Saturday to trial our three hopefuls and all were around the 42.50  mark on a track rated 70 slow. Our Regency hero Billys Bullet beat our recent Monmore Summer Stayers winner Ferryforth Fran by 1/2 length and Rubys Rascal went smoothly beating the useful Fearless Phantom by just over a length. All three should have a say in the outcome of the event.

Just the two runners at Sheffield Tuesday with Ela Ela Genie 2nd behind Walshes Hill in a sprint and Calco Flyer miraculously qualifying for the Betfred Steel City Cup final.

As said California was our winner at Yarmouth in the East Anglian Derby heats and Clondoty Alex qualifying when second on Wednesday while over on the Sky card at Romford Swift Whirlwind was best of our three runners when 2nd over 575m.

On Friday we were out of luck at Romford but both Ninja Frankie and Saffrons Boxer qualified for their respective finals this week.

swift_bravo_fd.JPGOn Tuesday Lagile Vic took a heat of a kennel sweepstake over the sprint in 15.72 and Swift Kaylee finally got off the mark with a win in a nice 29.15.

On Friday only five runners with Giveabitback Sue taking a top grade race in 15.56 and Saturday the last three races were called off after the hare broke down. Before that Saffrons Honey took an A8 in 29.24, Swift Bravo scored a nice hat trick with a career best 28.38 run in an A4 and Vangaal ran a stormer to win an A3 in 28.43.

The second round heats of the East Anglian Derby take place at Yarmouth tonight and on Tuesday Calco Flyer heads a strong raiding party to Sheffield as he bids to land the Steel City Cup.

We will be at Romford on Friday and on Saturday the Yorkshire St Leger kicks off at Doncaster as well as the semi finals of the East Anglian Derby at Yarmouth. We also could be at Sittingbourne on Sunday.

Roswell Iceman is starting to get frustrating and we are in need of a winner. The Sky card at Sheffield on Tuesday offers a couple of good chances and none more so than the in form Airforce Duchess in the Ladies race at 7.43.

At Doncaster on Saturday all three of ours should go well but the unexposed Rubys Rascal might offer a bit of value

AIRFORCE DUCHESS - 3 pts win - 7.43 Sheffield - Tuesday

RUBYS RASCAL - 2 pts e.w ante post - Yorkshire St Leger - Doncaster - starts Saturday

ROSWELL ICEMAN - 2 pts ew ante post - East Anglian Derby - Yarmouth - lost
