It just didn’t happen for us in the St Leger final at Perry Barr on Thursday. Blueberry Bullet was chopped off at the bend by Night Time Danny as she paced up and then found trouble at the 3rd bend ending her chances, Antigua Mememe ran a blinder when chasing the leader hard for 3/4 of the race but was passed for second by eventual winner Space Jet but he kept on for a gallant 3rd spot. The winner finished like a train and broke the track record in the process. It wasn’t all bad as our marathon superstar Aayamza Royale also set new figures on the supporting card, weaving her way through the field after a slow start she burst clear with a lap to go and won by 6 lengths in 56.42, she now moves on to the Category 1 First Containers Marathon starting on Sunday along with Antigua Lava who ran well to win a six bend contest at Towcester on Sunday. Blueberry Bullet and Antigua Mememe will tackle the Hunt Cup again at Towcester at the end of the month.
I’ve always said one of the great pleasures in having a decent open race strength, backed by our loyal owners, is that if it doesn’t quite go your way one night there’s always tomorrow and once we had dusted ourselves down from Perry Barr we had to concentrate with runners at Romford on Friday with plenty preparing for the Champion Stakes which gets underway this Friday. If that wasn’t enough, come Sunday, we had three runners in the Kent Derby including our brilliant East Anglian Derby winner Antigua Storm, he had to give way to the Romford Puppy Cup winner Brookside Ritchie in his heat but lost nothing in defeat and as he has done in previous competitions he should improve with each run.
The fun doesn’t stop there as we travel to Sheffield this weekend to trial for next week's Steel City Cup with Sussex Cup winner Drumcrow Brent, East Anglian Derby finalist Billis Tudor and Balterio who won well at Towcester Sunday.
Incredibly and for the first time since I’ve been a trainer we have no entries in the Oaks starting this week at Perry Barr, we are short of open class 4 bend bitches, of course if it was over 6 or 8 bends we would have a plethora of entries!
Coolavanny Kyser’s chances of landing the Michael Lambe Birmingham Cup on finals night effectively ended out the traps as he and trap 2 Duke De Janerio crashed into each other and he could only finish 4th. Antigua Mememe was a good 3rd in the St Leger final with Bluberry Bullet down the field. Aayamza Dream broke the track record in the marathon while Aayamza Dream was second to the fast Burgess Elite in the supporting 710m.
At Romford on Friday we had a few runners in Champion Stakes trial stakes with Fatzboys Exile winning from off the pace in 35.80, Ivy Hill Skyhigh was second and Bo Shine Bullet and Agincourt Xena both 3rd. Rail Mccoy followed up his big priced victory with another 8/1 win in the heats of the Friday Night 500 Standard.
At Monmore on Saturday we had three runners. Ballymac Gaybo ran well when second in a 480 Standard and Druids Full Well showed promise when leading until the last bend before finishing 3rd, Aayamza Lexie having her first run out of season was beaten but needed the run.
On Sunday afternoon at Towcester we had a couple of winners. Balterio showed great promise when winning a decent 500m Maiden in a fine 29.54, Antigua Lava certainly is a law unto herself and after running poorly on her last appearance over 710m this week she ‘took off’ in a better race winning by 4 3/4 in a fine 43.35.
At Central Park just the three runners in the Kent Derby with Antigua Storm running a big race when second, Billis Tudor missed his break and found loads of trouble when eliminated while Ballymac Odie qualified in 3rd in his heat which got a bit messy.
Over at Henlow Call Me Tom led up in the 460m Maiden final but faded into 4th with Drumcrow Bruce in 3rd. Ballymac Honest qualified in the heats of the 550m Maiden when second while Early Knight on debut won well in the puppy heats in an excellent 27.53 and looks hugely promising.
On Saturday torrential rain saw the meeting abandoned with four races left on the card. Before the rain Pacey Michael made it 2 from 2 when landing an A6 in 28.46.
On Sunday Ice Cool Ellis grabbed a deserved win in an A7 in 28.38 and Breakfast Club took an A2 in a career best 27.73 for the Markwallisgreyhounds Racing Club.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACING - BALTERIO
WHAT’S ON NEXT WEEK
A busy Friday night at Romford with the heats of the Champion Stakes and also Antigua Socks and Rail Mccoy go in the Friday Night 500 Standard final.
On Sunday we have the heats of the First Containers Marathon at Towcester and Aayamza Royale will battle to try and win another Category 1 final but will have to beat Towcester specialist Savana Volcano and the St Leger winner Space Jet, Antigua Lava could also be in the mix after a great win last week
In the evening at Central Park Antigua Storm is on the Category 1 trail again as he goes in the semi finals of the Kent Derby, Ballymac Odie also is in the semis while over at Henlow Early Knight and Ballymac Honest run in their respective monkey finals
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Annoyingly Blueberry Bullet finished outside the top four in the St Leger final but we still have Antigua Storm going well in the Kent Derby at Central Park.
The Champion Stakes at Romford kicks off this week and we have 8 runners in all. Bombardier impressed in a trial over track and trip last week and has to be included in our bets, my other fancy is Ivy Hill Skyhigh and is one to keep on the right side of.
I can’t see our Greyhound of the Year Aayamza Royale being any value in the First Containers Marathon starting on Sunday at Towcester so would rather play Antigua Lava each way who looks in form.
BOMBARDIER - 2 pts each way ante post - Champion Stakes - Romford- starts Friday
IVY HILL SKYHIGH - 1.5 pts each way ante post - Champion Stakes - Romford - starts Friday
