Drumcrow Brent apart that was truly a shocker for the kennel in the Greyhound Derby first round heats at Towcester last week, from our eight entries we only have one through to the second round, a mixture of bad luck, and a couple, maybe slightly below par was to blame but I won’t say it’s a disaster as all our runners seem to have come off safe and sound and as they say you only need one to win it!

I actually thought the three nights of action at Towcester were superb and there were loads of impressive performances not least the out of retirement duo of Lenson Bocko and Queen Beyonce but overall there’s no doubt the Irish runners could dominate the event just like they did in the recent equine Cheltenham festival, the majority of their top four bend stars are here in force and it will take a huge effort for the British to knock them off their perch. Drumcrow Brent ran very well to win his heat on Thursday and the bookmakers were squealing a touch as he was one of the best backed winners of the round, he has drawn a reasonable heat on Friday in the second round and will have every chance of qualifying for the 3rd round for owners Michelle Connolly and Mike Davis.

playbook_fd.JPGAway from the Derby the kennel has been in fine form, both open racing and graded at Henlow and Towcester. On Friday the traffic across the country was at a standstill and our journey to Romford of around 1 1/2 hours took nearly 4 hours and despite leaving as early as we could we were still running late for kennelling and our first runner Aero Madrid was withdrawn. It didn’t stop us completing a good night with 4 winners including the ultra consistent Playbook in the Friday Night 500 Bitches Final, a nice reward for one of the most gutsy runners our kennel has. In four different A1’s at Henlow over the last week or so we have had the 1-2 which is quite incredible considering the excellent strength of the track's grade.

Hopefully our good form continues as this Saturday we have three entries in the Category 1 Kent St Leger at Crayford. Bo Shine Bullet is looking to avenge her defeat in the Golden Jacket back in February where she was knocked over in the final when odds on to land the spoils, her recent runner up in the George Ing St Leger at Yarmouth shows us what a good competition bitch she is and no one would begrudge her a victory in a couple of weeks' time. Fatboyz Trixie (formerly Anhid News) was also a Golden Jacket finalist and is in fine form on the open race circuit and should go well and our last runner is Antigua Lava, a very unexposed marathon runner in the making. The Category 2 Guys & Dolls also starts and both Playbook and Aero Madrid represent our team.

Plenty of people and the media are asking me about Aayamza Royale and our superstar marathon runner returns this week with a trial at Monmore on Friday. We will look to get her a race or two before the Dorando marathon heats at Towcester, we obviously will enter her but she certainly seems more suited elsewhere than Towcester but she will give it her all as usual. We have some up and coming potential marathon runners not least Aayamza Dream who is currently in season, she has looked the real deal in Ireland and comes over in a couple of weeks' time and the two may certainly clash before Aayamza Royale is retired.

OPEN RACING

On Thursday the Greyhound Derby kicked off at Towcester and in the opening heat Fatboyz Exile made his debut but was struck into out the boxes from a horrible trap 4 draw and his Derby dream literally ended after two strides. Drumcrow Brent looked slightly in need of the run but ground out a solid victory in heat 2 in 29.70, Ballymac Gaybo also on debut suffered a rough ride but tried his best to get in front but was bumped out of contention around the last two bends. Coolavanny Kyser one of our leading hopes suffered a rare missed break and was always on the back foot trying to qualify but could only finish fourth in his heat.

On Friday at Towcester it was most disappointing to see what I thought was our main hope Ivy Hill Skyhigh fail by a short head to qualify, he was totally squeezed up on the run to the turn and never got a clear run as he made his move, another day for him. Our other runner Hopes Bullet, recently purchased by the Markwallisgreyhounds Racing Club, never really got into the race in the last heat of the night and though not beaten far he was only 5th in his heat. Over at Romford Antigua Socks followed up on his debut open race win with another 24.11 victory, Tiffield Beauty sprang a 25/1 surprise in her first ever open and won a 575m Maiden by merit as she won well in 35.41, Playbook took the bitches final with a gutsy 24.46 and to complete a good night Fatboyz Trixie won well over 750m in a good 47.16.

On Friday we just had our two bitches in the final batch of first round heats but neither Black Eyed Molly or Zachs Tornado could  land a blow and were eliminated.

HENLOW & TOWCESTER REVIEW

bryce_canyon_fd.JPGOn Monday at Henlow Civils Jasmine was our only winner when she took an A4 in a fine 27.79. Over at Towcester on Tuesday we had a lovely winner in the shape of the promising Bryce Canyon who took an A5 in an eye catching 29.77, there was also a good performance from Blueberry Bullet who stayed on well to land an A3 in 29.79.

On Thursday Henlow replaced Towcester’s meeting and we had a nice 1-2 in the A1 with the exciting Antigua Littlun beating Rail McCoy by the minimum margin in 27.75. Also on Towcester’s Derby card was one graded race, an A3, and this was taken by Tiffield Maximus in a nice 29.93.

At the weekend at Henlow on Saturday Scrahane Boss won well in an A4 in his career best 27.84 and in an A1 we saw the in form Drumcrow Bruce beat kennel mate Sweet Pear by 2 3/4 lengths in a fine 27.65. On Sunday we again had another 1-2 in an A1 as Muxton Teddy beat Saffrons Smash by a couple of lengths in 27.97

We seemed to have burnt our fingers a bit straight away as Drumcrow Brent is our only interest left in the Greyhound Derby! Let’s see if we can’t recover and hopefully Bo Shine Bullet can regain losses when she goes in the Kent St Leger heats on Saturday, no doubt she will be skinny and I see no reason why we shouldn’t include Fatboyz Trixie in our calculations.
