Monday 19th May 2008

If there was one newsletter I did not want to write then this is the one - the sad news on Friday of the closure by mid August of our beloved Walthamstow. It has left myself, my wife Sarah, and my staff totally devastated. At the moment I'm still trying to take in what has to be a serious blow not just for us and all my loyal owners but for the sport we love as a whole. For the time being I feel real anger at the whole situation but I shall not use our website to voice my opinions right at this moment. I would like to reassure all my owners that the welfare of the greyhounds in our care is of the utmost importance and hope that everyone would bear with us for the time being until the picture becomes more clearer.

The timing of the above situation couldn't have been worse with the Blue Square Greyhound Derby in full swing but our two remaining entries Commander Chief and Seanis Lad gave us all something to smile about as they superbly progressed into Tuesday's Quarter Finals. Unfortunately Seanis Strike, who had won so well in round two, lost the battle to be fit for the third round after a sprained ligament in the wrist prevented him from taking his chance. Hopefully it won't be a long term injury and this fella will be one of our big race stars for the rest of the year.

Genesis Dream thankfully has came off OK after being bashed from pillar to post in Peterborough's 605m Sky race supporting the Puppy Derby. Our other runner on the night,Genesis Alix the in form Genesis Alix, made it three from three at the track when involved in a thriller with David Pruhs's Primitive Way in the 790m Marathon and she eventually won the battle by 1/2 length in a calc 50.04.

Some tough races for our dogs in Walthamstow's Thursday opens. Elusive Tuesday on her six bend debut led right till the wire before being 'dogged' on the line by the enigmatic Ullid Tara in 40.59 (-20). Eye Onthe Flame also had no answers to the returning Hotdog Jack when second beaten 2 3/4 lengths in a fast 29.23 (-10). In the second heat of the Duffy Group Test over 640m Discreet Cat overcame a tricky draw to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 40.29 (-30) which coincidentally was our 100th open winner of the year. Rockburst Mason ran on to finish 3rd in Div 2 of the standard and he looks like a stiffer test of stamina might suit. Heat 3 of the 'Test' threw together both our kennel stars Directors Chair and Aero Blackjack but both were upstaged somewhat when Steady Scholes led at the first bend and then held the late challenge of Aero Blacjack by 1 1/2 lengths in 39.95 (-30) with Directors Chair getting in all kinds of trouble finishing last.

At Romford on Friday we sent a decent team for the regular opens and both Chilli Cobra (4th) and Missed A Train (5th) were stepped up in trip but looked like there was a banana skin in the traps as they both stumbled upon leaving the traps and were soundly beaten though they should go better next time. The soon to be departing Roswell Zodiac again gave a good account of himself when second in a 400m Standard beaten 3/4 ength in 24.44. Eye Onthe Force made it two from two at the track with a 3 length win over Swift and Stung in 36.25 in Div 2 of the 575m Standard. Directors Vision (2nd) and Millwards Summit (4th) were soundly beaten and Eye Onthe Spirit, though only 5th in the Maiden 750m, looked short of a run.

The Blue Suare Greyhound Derby has now reached fever pitch and Saturday's third round heats at Wimbledon produced some top class action. For us Seanis Lad is running his heart out for owner Mark Gilbert and in heat 2 he just got round the bend in front and despite the fact the others were closing fast he held them at bay to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 29.23. Our other runner, Commander Chief, has performed with great credit so far and in heat 3 he chased home Tyrur Laurel to safely qualify for the quarters beaten 3/4 length in 28.91.

Some near misses on Monday's Bags card with Centaur Fuzzums (2nd), Special Roxi (3rd) and Arch Honcho (3rd) before Notanothersecond scored when coming from off the pace by 3 3/4 lengths in 29.56 and then Roswell Zodiac followed his Friday Romford win with a victory in an A3 by the same margin in 29.02.

Tuesday's card was opened with a fine debut win for Princess Organa by a convincing 4 1/2 lengths in 29.49 (+10) and was followed by another good win for Ballyfinn Swift who in only his 2nd race showed good pace to romp away from his field to score by 5 1/2 lengths in 29.43. Treacle Pearl was also having her second race and when she trailed the other runners after early bother a win looked unlikely but she had other ideas and coming through the field she got up by a neck in 29.67. Mountjoy Ruby and Roswell Gemini both ended runners up but ran well as did Ants Gunner who finished a good third beaten only a short head and neck in 29.23 (-10).

On Saturday Same Approach (3rd) and the unlucky Cassius Clay (2nd) ran well as did Seanis Doire who led before being caught by the strapping Mistley Colonel in 29.08 with Kinda Classic running on in 3rd spot. Pinewood Evo having her first run for a couple of weeks was caught
right on the line by Rahora in 29.43. The S1 was turned into a procession for Twilight Fantasy as she led all the way to win by 4 1/2 lengths in 39.97. Promising pup Mountjoy Gold got his name on the scoresheet when taking an A4 by 1 1/2 lengths in 29.26. Ortuna was second beaten 1 3/4 lengths in 29.24 before the talented Lockdale Duke won the A1 in 29.00 (-10).

Monday sees the heats of the TV 750m at Romford with Mooloolaba and Centaur Iris in action. The Quarter Finals of the Derby are live on SKY on Tuesday and we have other runners on the supporting card as well including the in form Genesis Alix taking on Spiridon Louis. Thursday is open night at the Stow including the Duffy Group Test Final in which we are represented by Aero Blackjack and Discreet Cat. We will have runners at Romford Friday and on Saturday it's back to Wimbledon hopefully with qualifiers from Tuesday and also Eye Onthe Veto (Derby Plate) and Eye Onthe Flame (Champion Hurdle) on the card.
