Monday 5th January 2009

Firstly all of us at Imperial Kennels would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and we hope it can be as successful as 2008! After having a quietish couple of weeks the season has now begun with our first open runners at Hall Green last Friday in the heats of the William Hill (well done for stepping in to sponsor this event at the last minute) Prestige where we had mixed fortunes. On Sunday our open race action at Coventry produced the first open winner when the improving Reagrove Class won well over 480m. Our first graded runners at Harlow this year went well with last week's tally being 5 winners from 17 runners - an excellent start. This coming week the open action really kicks into overdrive as tonight the Coronation Cup at Romford over 575m begins which has attracted a decent field with Droopys Zach flying the flag for our kennel. The Prestige semi's over 645m at Hall Green continues on Tuesday and Butterbridge Ali should have a good chance of making the following Tuesday's final. The first Category 1 event begins on Friday when the heats of the Birmingham Cup take place at Perry Barr and it looks like it will attract a top class field and we will look to enter six runners who all trialled last week at this terrific running track. Mountjoy Gold really pleased us with a superb 28.15 calc trial with a flying 3.51 split but also impressive were Goldcrest King (28.34) and Eye Onthe Class (28.38).

This year we will continue to produce this quality website and over the next few weeks all of our columns will be regularly updated. These include a new Feature Greyhound of the Week, a Guest Column that will give readers and guests a chance to post their likes and dislikes plus their views on the sport and at the end of each newsletter any recommended bets for the forthcoming week to hopefully see us all in a healthy profit for the year! If there's any other feature you would like, feel free to let us know.

Next Saturday promises to be a night to remember when my owners and guests are invited to my good friend Peter Sanderson's pub in Roxwell to help us celebrate last year's Championship victory. Expect some sore heads come next Sunday morning!

Friday our first runners of the year contested the heats of the Prestige over 645m at Hall Green and Butterbridge Ali ran a stormer when making ante-post favourite Romeo Maldini pull out all the stops, eventually going down by 1 1/2 lengths in 40.72 (-135). Rhias Beauty could never strike a blow and was last. Genesis Dream 7/4 jf in her heat missed her break but barged her way to the front but couldn't get clear of the chasing pack and on very testing conditions especially for tight railers succumbed on the run in to finish 5th to Buffalo Vieri in a slow 41.50 (-135).

At Coventry on Sunday it looked like a few of our entries were short of a run. Youngster Congo Invader (5th) crucially missed his break in a sprint. Reagrove Class showed great speed to lead at the first bend and did well to hold on by a length in 29.77 to record our first open winner of the year. Both Scintillas Ruby (5th) and Genesis Alix (5th) should be better for their spins. Eye Onthe Brave (6th) had no chance with the middle to wide running Iceman Boss seeded rails and drawn on his inside and was bumped all over the place. Ballyfinn Swift ran well when runner up to Mineola Return beaten 2 3/4 lengths in 29.73 as did Elusive Jazz who was 3rd in the top division won by Little Jigg in a fast 29.24 (+10).

Our first graded runners for nearly three weeks started on Friday and Hollywell Pearl was 2nd after leading at the 3rd bend beaten 1 1/2 lengths in 26.92 (-25). Wilson Pick It led at the first bend and took advantage of a pile up between the rest of the field to win by 9 lengths in 27.08 (-25). Rockybay Class, returning from nearly 3 months off the card from injury, followed up with a convincing win by 3 1/4 lengths in 26.75 (-25). Risky Sensation was strangely odds on after her debut win but had to settle for 2nd when beaten 3/4 length in 26.67 (-25) but lost nothing in defeat. Toasting Jack was also highly tried after returning from injury but still ran well when 4th to Vigorous Zico in a fast 26.16 (-25) and Bell Tempest (4th) was another returning from the sidelines and should be better for the spin.

On Saturday's card Rank N File won well when leading at the 3rd bend to score by 1 1/2 lengths in 26.64 (-20). Aero Rapido was impressive when taking the S2 in all the way fashion coming home 3 1/4 lengths to the good in a fast 38.49 (-50). Jonos Patience led home a kennel 1-2 when beating Risky Fabio by 2 lengths in 26.64 (-30). Genesis Sister (6th) never got into the warm S1 but Genesis Gemstone ran well when 3rd to Ronnies Special beaten 2 3/4 lengths in 26.68 (-30).

The heats of the Coronation Cup begin tonight and a quality entry includes the likes of Droopys Carvalho and Vatican Jinky. For our kennel Droopys Zach, Mooloolaba and Mountjoy Diamond will look to qualify for Friday's semi's. The Prestige Semi's on Tuesday at Hall Green see Butterbridge Ali running in from trap 5 and he should have every chance to make next Tuesday's Final. Harlow's first batch of opens for the year start on Wednesday which includes the heats of the Monkey Maiden Stayers over 592m where we have Lockdale Storm pencilled in. We will also be at Coventry for opens that night. On Friday the first round heats of the Category 1 Birmingham Cup at Perry Barr commence with Mountjoy Gold, Goldcrest King, Eye Onthe Class, Eye Onthe Brave, Directors Ruler and Pinewood Evo all likely entries. We will also be at Romford where the semis of the Coronation Cup take centre stage. Sunday opens at Coventry complete a busy week.
