Monday 6th August 2007
Once again its been one of those up and down weeks for the kennel with plenty of winners at Walthamstow and away at other tracks with some bad luck with injuries that have cursed us lately. Roswell Starship our Romford Puppy Cup winner was having his first race at Peterborough in the heats of the Derby since his third place in the Pall Mall final back in May; challenging for the lead he lost his action and faded in to last. Clearly all was not right and an x-ray the next day revealed a triple break in the hock and now Evan Herbert's ace will be retired. At Wednesday's Walthamstow trial session Directors Wish came off lame after a solo 640m trial and has done the same injury as Pinehurst Silk - a chipped bone behind the wrist and is rated at only 50/50 to race again. All in all very frustrating for the owners of these Greyhounds and another bad blow for our open race aspirations. On a more positive note a few excellent performances especially Fear Robben and Butterbridge Ali on Thursday have lifted spirits. Congratulations are in order to Sam Poots and Darren Keefe for winning the Sussex Cup with Barnfield On Air one of the finest performances seen in a final for many a year!
On our website's Dogs For Sale page three pups from the Top Honcho-Kinda Sleepy litter have been offered for sale at a reduced price to stay in the kennel and if any one is interested I wouldn't hang around as I don't believe these decent pups will be available for too long.
The football match at Harlow between Walthamstow and Greyhound Scene Forum yesterday was a great game even if the old legs are in need of surgery this morning! The heat was scorching but the game was played in terrific spirit and we eventually came out on top 3-2 after coming from behind twice!
At Peterborough on Tuesday in the heats of the John Smiths Extra Smooth Derby mixed fortunes for Evan Herbert's duo Roswell Phoenix and Starship with Phoenix winning in a fast 25.36 first time up, but as stated above the unfortunate Roswell Starship was injured in his heat. At Hove Stride On Babe finished 4th after trouble at the first bend in the bitches final that supported the Sussex Cup. On Thursday the open card from Walthamstow provided Eye Onthe Power with his first win over the 640m trip when he led all the way in the VC Bet Grand Prix trial stakes Div 3 to record 40.16(-15), In my opinion Butterbridge Ali can achieve a lot now stepped up to six bends and he didn't dissapoint in his debut over 640m. Leading at the first bend he pulled well clear to win by 9 1/2 lgths in a good 39.83(n) and if that was a great run then Fear Robben's was even better as he trounced a decent field in the Div 1 of the Grand Prix trial stakes coming home 12 1/4 lgths ahead of his nearest rival in 39.61. Snappy Girl returned to Walthamstow to notch up another fine win in the 835m August Marathon by 3 1/4 lengths in 53.19. Ortuna(3rd) ran well in the 475m Maiden and a win is just around the corner for her. Discreet Cat was made a 5/4 favourite in Div 2 of the Grand Prix trial stake but once he was led up by Fear Martina he was never going to win but finished a good runner up. On Friday the second round of the Peterborough Derby took place with Roswell Phoenix finishing a good second in her heat after missing the break and is in the hat for next Tuesdays Semi's. Our other open race action was on Sunday at Sittingbourne with a few runner. In trials before racing Directors Chair flew round in 29.02 - 6 spots inside the track record which is awesome and with Killer Keane recording a smart 29.22 we look forward to next week's John Smiths Kent Derby that gets underwa. In races that included trial stakes for the Derby it was nice to see Bubbly Magic get back on the winning rostrum as he led all the way to win in 29.75. Snappy Girl is thriving on plenty of work as she won another marathon when beating Omega Wink by 1/2 lgth in 57.62 and in the top division of the trial stakes Shelbourne Ryan ran a stormer to win in 29.56.
Mondays BAGS card produced a couple of nice winners in Blackmagic Rose 29.07 (+20) and Special Roxi returned to form when winning in 29.14. On Tuesday Banjo Ocean just got up on the line to win an A8 in 29.50 (+30). Coolanga Flyer was the best of our three runners in the top grade 640m race finishing runner up. Tenbucks Ebony's first run out of season was a winning one as she won the A6 by a 1 1/4 lgths in a good 29.00 (+20) and at last Largo Lassie got her head in front as she beat Eye Onthe Spark by over 2 lgths in 29.07 (+20). Daisyfield Matti (2nd) and Vigorous Whitney(3rd) both ran well. On Saturday from only eleven runners it was nice to have four winners and it was Ragga Diva who set the ball rolling with a half length win in the A7 in 29.46 (+20), Carden Noir was overdue a win but was impressive when holding kennel companion Sofem in 29.46 (+20). Irate Kate dead heated for 1st place in the S1 and a back to form Special Deal won the A1 from Vigorous Whitney in a good 28.78 to complete a good night for the kennel.
